This movie is probably the worst Studio Ghibli work I've seen so far.
First of all, there is no room for laziness in the painting, and it is quite satisfactory. The style of painting has been transformed into the standard Japanese comic style that we often see.
Music is ok.
The background story is based on the theme of Western fantasy, and it seems that the world view is very big, what dragon, what magician, what world balance, etc. At first, it does not seem like a boring story.
The world view is very grand, but many important plots are not explained, which makes people look in the clouds and fog, and many places cannot be understood. The central idea also does not fit well with the known plot, but the director deliberately emphasizes it through the dialogue of the characters, which is somewhat didactic.
There are a lot of missing content and unreasonable places, such as how does the female lead reconcile with the male lead? The Archmage is very powerful in front, why can't he use his strength in the back? The female protagonist found and persuaded the male protagonist easily? How many subordinates does the spider have? Isn't the spider rendered very strong, why was it killed by the male and female lead, that's all? The heroine can also switch to dragon form?
To put it simply, although the details are well presented, it is obvious that the director cannot tell this huge story well in 120 minutes, which is enough to show that the director's level is not OK and ruin the work.
