the Grand Master

Kenji Kawai's "The Grandmaster" is to Ip Man what the "General's Order" was to Huang Feihong.

If the self-improvement of a man reflects the heroic atmosphere of traditional Chinese martial arts in the last century, a generation of masters is the best interpretation of the modesty and restraint in Chinese martial arts in this century.

I respect artistic freedom and accept artistic exaggeration, so I readily accept that in a non-documentary film you can see Brad Pitt smashing Bruce Lee and Donnie Yen and Tyson halfway through.

In reality, I understand that some martial arts arenas can't beat free fighting boxing and Sanda, and I also know that most of those who call themselves masters are just like Master Luo from Ip Man - the clown. But these can't restrain my love for kung fu movies. In the past, there were too many Shaw Brothers kung fu martial arts movies or old Jackie Chan movies on cctv6 or rental discs. These imprints carry my infinite expectations for kung fu movies today. I am fascinated and admired by these well-designed moves, which should and are clearly world-class, otherwise Quentin and Wachowski would not have asked these teams to do the moves.

Having said too much nonsense, let's go back to this movie. As the last film of Ip Man finally used the crotch index finger to go in the throat, it not only symbolizes the end of this series and the twilight of the hero of a generation of masters, it may also be the end of a generation of Hong Kong kung fu films. No one will shoot Kung Fu Master like this again. Who else will play Kung Fu Master in the future?

Ip Man 4: The Finale quotes

  • Ip Man: Uncle Ip is a martial artist. In the face of injustice, I must stand up and fight. That was why we took up martial arts. This is something I very much want to do. Just as you want to cheer leading.

  • Ip Man: Self-confidence is the most important thing, no matter where you are.
