Bergman's well-known work tells the story of an old man who connects memories through dreams, interlaces the past and reality, conducts self-examination and self-reflection, and finally reconciles with himself.
The first dream is the anxiety of death, the second dream is officially starting to recall, the figure of the first love and betrayal, the third dream is self-judgment (heart blindness, ego, callous) wife cheating, the fourth dream is reconciliation, back to In childhood, there is the smile of first love and the harmony of parents. In reality, the old man was indifferent to his family at first, but later he began to understand and care.
Because of the indifference and selfishness of the parents in the growing environment, the old man developed his same character, which caused the failure of his marriage and family. This atmosphere continued to the next generation of sons and daughters-in-law, and the same unhappy life. This kind of destiny from the family is like a curse, but under the desire of the daughter-in-law to say "but I want love", and the old man's reflection and self-examination, happiness seems to be possible. The film has the black gloom of "Wuthering Heights", and the feeling of fate.
I remember that in "Ivan's Childhood", the director also used dreams to recall his childhood, picking up lost or happy times. Dreams are the projection of human subconsciousness, and it seems to be the second self. There are scattered fragments of the past in the dream, the logic is disrupted, and there is a sense of reality in the chaos. When I wake up, I sometimes feel that the reality is very strange, and sometimes I feel fortunate that it is just a dream. But waking up always tries to piece the dream together, or try to rationalize its logic. This may be the reason why movies use dreams to present memories.
Some other lines are good. "If I worry or worry during the day, it often brings back childhood memories." "You know a lot, but nothing." "I'm alive, but I'm dead."
