The Power of Contrast: Writing Sadness with Joy

This is an advanced technique.

Photographers all know that when shooting white snow, the best way to express the whiteness of the snow is to shoot people or objects that are dark on the snow. In the language of computer vision or graphics, the human eye is less sensitive to absolute values, and more sensitive to relative values. The brightest and darkest range of brightness that a camera's light can image, known as latitude, is the ability of the camera. The difference in brightness between the bright and dark parts of an image is (loosely) called contrast. High-contrast photos appear sharp, blacks feel blacker, and whites feel whiter.

Back to the story. As creators, we must improve our "tolerance", and the greater the range of ability to grasp extreme emotions, the better. On the finished piece, make the most of contrast. It will make opposing emotions more prominent.

In contrast writing, writing sadness with joy is the most common. There are many practical ways of doing it. For example , the first half of the comedy turns into a tragedy , such as "Memories of Murder". There are many Chinese films, such as "I'm Not the God of Medicine", "Donkey Gets Water", "The Unknown", etc. Also simple.

For example , comparing the tragic life of a character's comedy identity , such as "The Clown" and "King of Comedy", it depends on the needs of the plot and whether the character has this characteristic.

Another example is the use of comical forms to show tragic stories , such as "Life is Beautiful", Chaplin movies, "Jojo Rabbit" and so on. This requires a high sense of form, and it is easy to be self-defeating if the operation is not good.

And "Kaguya Story" is different, it is a more advanced approach. Its sadness and joy are two sides of the same body . The audience's emotion towards Kaguya's encounter is sadness or joy. It depends on the perspective, the audience's experience and their own feelings, which has the ambiguity that the author deliberately created . For example, when Kaguya is leaving, there is a lot of love and kindness in the world, as well as a lot of filth and restraint. Whether it is sad or happy to return to the pure Tiangong creates a dilemma, not only for Kaguya, but also for the audience. But if you interpret it from any angle, the degree of sadness and joy is very strong, and the tolerance is extremely large. Their contrast strengthens each other. The ending "Music of Heaven and Man" Ying Hui Ye left the world full of love and hatred, and returned to the clear and lonely Heavenly Palace, which not only has Buddha nature and Zen, but also has a strong sense of terror. This feeling is very rich. It can be felt that the 80-year-old director Hsun Takahata has a very deep understanding of life before giving a sharp torture: in life, is it a blessing or a punishment? His attitude is clear, no matter how hard life is, it is better than an empty heaven. So it ended up being a tragedy. This is the use of contrast to write sadness at the thematic level. Not just in the character structure, or the contrast in narrative techniques.

This continues to echo what I have emphasized in another article, the height of the creator's thinking ability determines the depth of the theme of the work, which is the upper limit of the work . The level of artistic ability determines the degree of completion of the work.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya quotes

  • The Princess Kaguya: [singing] Go round, come round, come round... come round, oh distant time. Come round, call back my heart. Come round, call back my heart. Birds, bugs, beasts, grass, trees, flowers. Teach me how to feel. If i hear that you pine for me, i will return to you.
