some stories are hidden

Begin to wonder why movies fascinate us so much. Later, I thought, maybe it was because I could always piece together my whole self out of it. Seemingly simple, scarred, dedicated to life, even morbid self. Or to peep into the true meaning of life. Many unrealizable ideals and many unrealistic wishes are blooming on the screen one by one. Play various roles. Then, we smile, or sigh. Gradually become full of hope in life, or, like reading a scandal note, begin to resist the sudden enthusiasm of strangers and look at the world with colored eyes.

The story has a very decadent tone throughout. Troubled schools, troubled students, reticent and tired teachers. It opens with the babble of an old woman. She is a history teacher. She writes a diary every day, and she decides to attach a few stars to the diary based on the stories that happened that day. She never married. Like the vast majority of lonely and dying people, she has a cat as a sustenance.
Later, we learned that she was still gay. Her name is Barbara.

One day, a female teacher came to Barbara's school, the beautiful, noble and gentle Shiba. Her arrival has undoubtedly added a lot of color to this school. The mischievous students kept teasing the new teacher and pointing fingers at her beautiful appearance. Barbara and Sheba's friendship begins with Barbara's well-meaning relief. Later, they begin a friendship that seems likely to last, until Barbara discovers that Sheba is having an affair with the fifteen-year-old student. Barbara's questionable sense of justice is defeated. She hides the affair for Sheeba and asks Sheeba to sever ties with fifteen-year-old Steven. Then, Barbara began to show an unusual desire for friendship, visiting Sheba more often, and even more time at Sheba's house. Looking at Sheba's son with Down syndrome, her eccentric daughter, and her older husband with disgust. Then I was amazed at the presence of a responsible mother in Sheba's beautiful exterior, and began to find reasons to accept her cheating: it was all just entertainment for her to breathe.

Later, we lamented that the power of man is too small. There is simply no way to fight sin.
The fifteen-year-old boy deliberately weaves lies to get close to his female teacher. This is one of the most emotional episodes in the entire film. Fifteen years old, already know how to let the female teacher fall into the trap, how can it be considered youthful. What a waste of the blue sky above our heads that teaches us our youth. And the kind-hearted Shiba seems to accept this unethical love needlessly, just to satisfy the psychology of being loved.

Barbara eventually uses the rumors to expose Sheba. All because Shiba chose the latter as a mother in the cat's funeral and the performance of her son's first play. Barbara buried her cat in the garden, along with the expensive picture frame Sheba gave her at Christmas. Then, a few tears rolled down the old woman's wrinkled face. She stubbornly believed that Shiba had betrayed their friendship - if such a relationship could be called a friendship. She has never had a home, and her family is a cat that can't make a sound. She doesn't understand that as a mother, children must be the most important thing to her.

Reporters crowded the school, and teachers whispered. Everyone is waiting for a good show to play.
The boy's mother came to the door, pulled Shiba's hair fiercely, and asked her how she could bear to poison the fifteen-year-old boy. Shiba's children watched from the top of the stairs as their mother was beaten to the ground. And Xiba didn't realize it at the moment, the person who betrayed her was Barbara, and even used Barbara's home as a refuge.

She slept tiredly on the big bed. Barbara's greedy fingers ran across her polished calf, unknowingly satisfying her equally unknowing emotions.

Life goes on.
Until Shiba accidentally found Barbara in the waste paper cage and kept a diary page of the stars. All hopes and smiles are sealed. Why hasn't she understood until now that what we need is not a shelter, but a way of life that allows us to respite? In the end, she returned to her home in despair.

The story ends with Shiba being sentenced to ten months in prison. And Barbara meets another woman on the mountain where Sheba used to watch the sunset. Start a new life. Every day there are people who long to be loved, long to be heard.

It's a really sick world.

Notes on a Scandal quotes

  • Barbara Covett: When I was young I had such a vision of myself. I dreamed I'd be someone to be reckoned with, you know, in the world. But one learns one's scale. I've such a dread of ending my days alone. But recently, I've allowed myself to think that I may not be. Am I wrong?

  • Barbara Covett: People like Sheba think they know what it is to be lonely. But of the drip, drip of the long-haul, no-end-in-sight solitude, they know nothing. What it's like to construct an entire weekend around a visit to the launderette. Or to be so chronically untouched that the accidental brush of a bus conductor's hand sends a jolt of longing straight to your groin. Of this, Sheba and her like have no clue.
