The main character is a young man named Fred, who has pursuits and ideals. A car accident in his youth prevented him from becoming a singer, but he has been working hard to form a band of his own. He encouraged musicians who had already spent their lives on the subway to pursue their ideals, recommended singers for the band, and even robbed him of money to put on a real concert for himself.
At the end of the film, he stood under the stage, watching his friends on stage, and the orchestra he had worked so hard to build began to perform. His intoxicated and forgetful appearance, and the scene of chanting the beat even when he died, was touching.
Although there is an element of love in the text, I think it serves the theme, not the theme itself.
Because of Helena's love, it seems to be a foil to the hero's tenacious character and courage to pursue freedom, happiness and ideals. Because of this Helena, Fred caused the jealousy of his husband, and finally, in the pursuit of the police and the squeeze of social civilization, Fred died under the gun of Helena's husband. Therefore, Helena's appearance is completely shaped by the character of the hero and arranged according to the needs of the plot.
Helena is the only one from civilized society who intervenes in the lives of the members of the subway as an observer. The orphan's kind, sincere nature was finally aroused and awakened by them. She sympathized with them, understood them, and even went from being a vehement opponent, an active oppressor, to trying to fit in with them, to be one of them. Here, she felt the pure love from Fred, the friendship, sincerity and harmony of the people living in the subway. When she returned to the ground, when she returned to her husband, when she returned to the banquet in the civilized society, she became more and more independent, and she felt the hypocrisy, emptiness, boredom, and shameless real life of high society. Begin on the road of rebellion. When she finally wanted to break free and fall into the dark, small, dirty, poor but warm, sincere embrace of Fred's subway, Fred fell in a pool of blood, in the fulfillment of his dreams. In an instant.
The ending is unquestionable, the arrest of the Pulley Kid, the death of Fred, and the helpless and sad life of Helena. Because of their enhanced civilization, morality and the rule of law appear so pale in front of them. It is impossible for them to fight against this powerful system and civilization, and what awaits them can only be a long night!
(Old work)
The reason why I posted the old work here is to complete my film notes. Although the feeling is relatively rough, and the text seems immature, it is a history that I can't escape.
