Poem recited by Isolde from The Good-Morrow

--John Donne (1572-1631)

I wonder by my troth, what thou and I
Did, till we lov'd? Were we not wean'd till then,
But suck'd on country pleasures, childishly?
Or snorted we in the seven sleeper's den?
'Twas so; but this, all pleasures fancies be.
If ever any beauty I did see,
Which I desir' d, and got, 'twas but a dream of thee.

I can't guess, who were you and me before we fell in love?
Is it those naive teenagers, with pacifiers in their mouths,
innocent and innocent, carefree in the countryside?
Or the seven dwarfs snoring and sleeping?
Even so; those aren't worth the aftertaste.
If, if I see any beauty -
desire and follow me physically and mentally, it is you in my dream!

And now good morrow to our waking souls,
Which watch not one another out of fear;
For love, all love of other sights controls,
And makes one little room, an everywhere.
Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone,
Let maps to other, worlds on worlds have shown, Let us possess
one world, each hath one, and is one.

Wishing us a great future,
fearless, we stare at each other and listen to each other;
for love, everything else is just the occasion, and
every small space can build our love nest.
Let the New World be history, navigators know those things,
let others know the world, and the map is useful to them;
give us this space, yours is in me,
mine is in you, and no one can tell the difference.

My face in thine eye, Thine in mine appears
,

And true plain hearts do in the faces rest
;

Where can we find two better hemispheres,
where can we find two better hemispheres Better two hemispheres?

Without sharp North, without declining West
?

Whatever dies, was not mixed equally;
Those who died, were all mixed and mixed;

If our two loves be one, Or, thou and I If our two loves be one, Or, thou
and

I none do slacken, none can die.
So dear, you and I will live forever.
