first impression of the truth

This movie, I only watched it once - in a sustainability class three months ago. Since I didn't have enough background knowledge before, I thought it was just an ordinary video. However, the persuasive content and editing made me immediately distinguish it from the usual "big shot" documentaries - the subsequent award was expected. My first impression was: shock. It is really a very convincing film, and I will say a few words in the order of impressions below.

1. Consciousness. Actions are dominated by consciousness. No matter how many facts and truths are presented in front of them, if the audience rejects them consciously, then no matter how “shocking” the truth is, it is only an “unpleasant” topic and will not inspire action. , the situation for the environment will not be reversed. So in the second half, Gore used the American public's indifference to the carcinogenicity of tobacco as a metaphor for today's indifference to global warming. In the middle and late last century, due to the admiration and imitation of western cowboys and the small peasant thinking of tobacco farmers, on the one hand, tobacco consumers were reluctant to accept the fact that cigarettes were "demonized", and on the other hand, tobacco manufacturers could not bear their vital interests. Damaged and strongly opposed to the carcinogenic view. It's a coincidence that nowadays people are accustomed to the convenience brought by a large amount of energy consumption, and factories and enterprises are unwilling to spend more money or spend time on retrofitting energy equipment or implementing energy-saving programs. The result is that everyone deceives themselves: although summer is getting hotter and hotter, winter will always come; or, car exhaust will be absorbed by the woods next to it - this is the purpose of planting trees, so as not to be emitted into the atmosphere. So good, with so many deeply disturbing facts, coupled with the foreshadowing of cancer, can't people wake up?

2. Strong science and popularity. The truth is based on data. The large number of graphs, forecasts, and various numbers and percentages in the film make the supported views "iron proof" and unshakable. And use causal logic to push back until dire conclusions are drawn. The concepts and principles are also explained in simple terms, and it is estimated that illiterate people can understand 70% to 80%, although for me, it is just a review of middle school geography. Therefore, it is very scientific and popular.

3. Globalization. Well, after all, it is a global issue, and globalization is inevitable. Nonetheless, this was all made possible by relying on Comrade Gore's extensive wandering speeches. One of the words in the film that touched me very much was that Gore said, (there is no one-size-fits-all or practical way to deal with this kind of environmental problem) I can only visit city by city and lobby person by person. In the film, he visited many cities and universities in China, not only concerned about climate change, but also about coal mining and population issues. This gives me a strong sense of urgency and mission as a Chinese.

Although it is a very convincing and good film, in my opinion, it overemphasizes one's own point of view, and even exaggerates or conceals facts to achieve its purpose, which lacks accuracy and fairness. For example, the greenhouse effect is not the only cause of climate warming, because the temperature of the earth is not static, but rises and falls regularly. It is indeed biased to directly blame carbon dioxide without excluding the law of its own temperature change and other reasons.

From start to finish, he was politically neutral. In the opening line, "I used to be the next president of the United States," Gore has isolated himself from politics, at least I think so. However, in all the comments on the Internet related to this movie, those narrow-minded people in the United States are talking nonsense without even watching the movie, which fully reflects freedom, democracy, and equality. Said he made a film to get votes? never mind. Since Gore is an environmentalist by nature (and co-founded Interactive TV with a friend), what's wrong with showing off his expertise?

Finally, the notes I made during the broadcast of the conversation between the US Senate Committee on Global Climate Change and Gore on C-SPAN2:
Global Climate Change Sonate Environment Committee
C-SPAN2, Al Gore (Alliance for Climate Protection Governing Concil Chairman) defends his An Convinient Truth and his opinion on environment against/discuss with tens of senators.
He looks a little tired and not as capable as he is on film. Also, always cite authority when answering questions, such as...the committee of top scientists...how many research reports and papers...the conclusions reached, and finally add a sentence "that's not what I said". I don't know whether to use authority to kill people or to avoid responsibility. However, some of the points discussed are quite interesting, with American characteristics

a. Global Battles. Environmental problems in other countries will also affect the United States, such as China & India, which are the most polluted. What should we do?
——On the one hand, convince them, provide leadership; on the other hand, they will solve it spontaneously. (Too cruel, only powerful countries are qualified to lead. Before, they led overexploitation and waste of resources, and now they lead us to improve the environment. Chilling)

b. sunspot is the cause of global climate change.
——At first, I didn’t understand what the sunspot was, but after I explained it clearly, Disagree. (This conclusion is too fast, you have not studied it) The reason is that the atmosphere is hot and cold inside and outside, and then it is citing authority.

c. Will Nuclear Energy be the future energy trend (Note: Except for special instructions, Americans generally refer to their own countries).
- small part, not a big part of all the energy sources. for economic and financial reasons. Nuclear power plants are large, have a long cycle, and require a lot of capital. Few people are willing to invest, and taxpayers are unwilling to support them.

d. The little girl from the poor family has to wear two clothes for the winter at home and has no money to heat the heater. (They debated back and forth for a long time, and I didn't understand

it.) e. The CO2 purchasing method mentioned.
- cap&trade or tax. (tax is easy to understand, it is energy tax; cap&trade is that each company allocates a certain amount of release fines for exceeding the standard. For example, a shoe factory gets 2.5 tons/month, if its own transformation technology has 2 tons/month remaining, it can follow the The market price is sold to other companies that may exceed the standard)
