Hit the road together! take you to dog town...

I've heard of "Dog Town" for a long time. The set is said to have reached minimalism, with the dogs all drawn in chalk. I can't think of what kind of film it is, but I can only think of the Chinese way of drama - the point where the sets are optional.

"Dog Town" is here. On a gloomy afternoon. No spirit. I.

I always do this afternoon. half asleep.

"Dog Town" is here.

A panorama of the town appeared. It looks like a house plan in a real estate advertisement. View from above, like a sectional view.
Small town life is like life on stage. No doors, no walls. There is some pretend furniture.
The people in the town are like people who act in a drama. Busy with the work in his hands, he can't see the slightest bit of truth.

This movie looks like it's going to be imaginative.

It's not bad. There is an old man who explains, he keeps telling us where is this and who is this. It's like listening to radio dramas or storytelling when we were young. You can even close your eyes.
Actually that's fine. I can think of a free landscape with my eyes completely closed. But to imagine here, we have to rely on the relatively unfamiliar materials it provides. Requires imagination, but not free.

feel compelled. I yawned for the first time.

There's a male lead here, Tom. He is a writer who cares about people's living conditions. In order to write a work, Huangdang went to the street marked by chalk, and followed the voice of the old commentator, walking from one house to another. Let us know the residents of the town.

It's really like a drama, but it's also divided into acts.

The title of the first act is "Tom Hears Gunshots and Meets Grace, a Mysterious Woman".
night. Tom is like a worried god looking for direction for the human mind, resting in a small town chair, or thinking. A gunshot: (A woman ran into the town in horror. Wearing a luxurious fur dress. Gorgeous. Said to avoid the gangster. Tom rescued the woman. And deceived the gangster who was after him. . He took the business card that the gang boss gave him.

Stranger came. Tom took her in. Small towns are not free to take in people. So Tom called the town to a meeting. The whole town decided to observe for a while. two weeks. If you are a good person, just stay.

The expedition begins. Grace wants to do something for the people of the town. Nobody wants to. The situation is awkward. But she persevered in running the demands. People are starting to accept her. She can do anything, like a genius. She cooked dinner for a single driver; she took care of the paralyzed black girl; the blind old man was no longer lonely, and Grace chatted with her; seven children were too many, and Grace took care of the couple; that many years There seems to be hope for those who fail the engineer's license, and Grace gives her tutoring. etc. Grace is important to the town. The townspeople think so. She was taken in, and there was a special person in charge of monitoring the only main road into the town, ringing the bell when they saw the police.

What a corny story. The princess in distress begins the life of the people. I continued to yawn.

But it's better than being in trouble. Grace starts a new life. Start a new life like someone who never had the past. Work is full of life. And, full of love. She bought Chinese porcelain dolls from the grocery store with her labor money. She comforts the single driver who has a crush on him, telling him that she doesn't blame him and sees him as a friend.

Everything is so warm. There is warmth between people. Spring is in full swing.

Everything went smoothly. I feel a little sleepy. Yawning again. continuously. Just like Wang's state before the drug addiction. Even writhing in the chair, unable to sit still.

But I try to keep my movements as modest as possible. After all, this is still an art film.

By the fifth act, "Dogtown Shows Its Teeth," I got a little bit of energy.

Autumn is here.
The police came and posted a wanted notice: Grace was a bank robber. Although she did not have the conditions to be at the crime scene. But the townspeople still decided to take the matter seriously. And meet to discuss a decision. Grace accepted. Grace left her condition: double work and less pay. busy. So you can't do everything well. Accusations poured into Grace from all directions. Grace endured calmly and politely without any resistance.

Grace later endured rape. Endured the abusive insults of Chuck's wife. Endured the slander of children.

Grace decides to run away.
but was taken back to town. The rape happened again on the way.

Grace could no longer escape. A dog chain-like torture device was placed around her neck, with a long iron chain attached to a heavy iron wheel. She became a slave in the town: a work slave by day and a sex slave by night.

The dark life cannot go on any longer.

Tom helps Grace. Let her state all the injustices she has suffered and the sins of the townspeople in front of the whole town. Residents of the town were outraged.

Tom did it just to get on Grace's bed Tom's way.
Grace no longer trusts anyone in the town.
Tom pulled out the card from his collection.

The end of the town is coming.
Grace sees the light of day again.

Grace is the daughter of a mob boss! Born in a gang, but always benevolent. Just leave home to test my ideas.

finish watching. The town was burned down. Everyone was shot. Grace went back to her father's car.

Think again.

At the end, when we see Grace doing evil coldly without any trace of humanity, we should not forget that she did evil because she had been so thoroughly good but fell into an extremely cruel situation!

Is evil a religion?

In fact, her kindness is just a gesture, a simple and boring gesture-blindly expressing kindness, regardless of the situation and occasion, without any principle at all. She is not like a person, more like an abstract idea in the crowd of a small town. And the reason why she made such a gesture was out of suspicion of the evil deeds of the gangster she was in (if the movie was reversed). Therefore, she came to the town with a purpose. The town became her specimen for this experiment. She didn't treat the people in the town as people like her at all. She just watched calmly and peacefully how the townspeople treated herself, like watching a play. In fact, there are two possibilities for people to do good and evil. People are always both good and evil. Residents of the town do. And so did Grace. She was good before, but didn't she also do evil later?

So does Tom.

He took in Grace. Actually wanted to see how the townspeople showed some moral problems. Then, he liked to engage in novel writing.

In this sense, both are as spectators, watching how other people live, and putting themselves out of it: one to see how people treat kindness; one to watch how people deal with kindness the ethical issues they face. None of them were genuinely integrated into the life of the human community as a single person. They think they are wise, stand above men, and see the truth.

In the end, none of them were able to lead a normal, healthy human life. One starts to do evil. One was killed.

Dogville quotes

  • Narrator: How could she ever hate them for what was at bottom merely their weakness? She would probably have done things like those that had befallen her if she had lived in one of these houses. To measure them by her own yardstick, as her father put it. Would she not, in all honesty, have done the same as Chuck and Vera and Ben and Mrs Henson and Tom and all these people in their houses? Grace paused and as she did, the clouds scattered and let the moonlight through, and Dogville underwent another of those little changes of light. It was as if the light previously so merciful and faint finally refused to cover up for the town any longer. Suddenly, you could no longer imagine a berry that would appear one day on a gooseberry bush, but only see the thorn that was there right now. The light now penetrated every unevenness and flaw in the buildings and in the people. And all of a sudden, she knew the answer to her question all too well. If she had acted like them, she could not have defended a single one of her actions and could not have condemned them harshly enough. It was as if her sorrow and pain finally assumed their rightful place. No. What they had done was not good enough. And if one had the power to put it to rights, it was one's duty to do so - for the sake of other towns, for the sake of humanity and not least, for the sake of the human being that was Grace herself.

  • Narrator: [as McKay explores even further with his hand] It was not Grace's pride that kept her going during the days when fall came and the trees were losing their leaves, but more of a trance like state that descends on animals whose lives are threatened - a state in which the body reacts mechanically in a low tough gear, without too much painful reflection. Like a patient passively letting his disease hold sway.
