A story between two generations

If a movie made 50 years ago still moves people's hearts today, it can be called a classic.

The story is about an old couple living in the countryside, who went to Tokyo to visit their eldest son who practiced medicine, the eldest daughter who opened a beauty salon, and the daughter-in-law of the second son who had forgotten his past. In busy Tokyo, the children did not have time to accompany them, only the second daughter-in-law took a day off to travel with them in Tokyo. Then the two old people were sent to the hot spring again, and they hurriedly returned to Tokyo because they missed their home, preparing to go back to the countryside. After returning home, the old lady died.

It is a very bland one to write a story between two generations, without foreshadowing, conflict, climax. The director does not make any comments, who is right or wrong, just tells an ordinary story objectively. The characters in the play have distinct personalities, the eldest son who is busy with work and indifferent, the eldest daughter who is shrewd and stingy, the kind-hearted but lonely Noriko (the second daughter-in-law), and the tolerant old parents. There are no faceless characters among them. Even the eldest son and daughter who have no time to take care of their parents are willing to pay their parents to go to the hot spring. Noriko, who is kind to the elderly by the director, also reveals the gradual forgetting of her deceased husband and loneliness. of fear.

In my opinion, the director is full of tolerance for each character, which makes the whole film very moving. In particular, it describes the warmth between Noriko and the old couple, which is delicate and touching. The younger generation is busy with their livelihoods and the older generation is ignored. Fifty years later, the situation is no different. Ozu has a deep understanding of the feelings between people, depicts the truth, and the techniques are fresh and memorable.

"It's okay, I won't let myself get old"

It is very clear what kind of treatment the two old people will encounter when they go to their children's house, and they can also expect death to come. The entire film is flat, all expected but still heartbreaking enough. After children grow up and leave home, they have their own lives. It is inevitable that they will become like the eldest son and the second daughter, but life is not an excuse, and filial piety and self-interest are not in conflict. As Noriko said, we all change but also resist that change.

Tokyo Story quotes

  • Osamu Hattori: Remember the governor's visit to Onomichi?

    Sanpei Numata: At Takemuraya?

Osamu Hattori: You got drunk. That young geisha who served...

    Sanpei Numata: Umeko?

Osamu Hattori: You liked her, didn't you?

Sanpei Numata: And the governor happened to like her too, remember?

  • Sanpei Numata: Look, Hirayama. She resembles someone, doesn't she?

Oden-ya no onna: There he goes again.

Sanpei Numata: Don't you think so?

    Shukichi Hirayama: Well, who?

Osamu Hattori: Yes, she does. That young geisha.

Sanpei Numata: Oh, no! She was fatter. This one resembles my wife.

    Shukichi Hirayama: Yes, you're right.

    Sanpei Numata: See, especially here.

Oden-ya no onna: Why don't you leave? You've had enough.

Sanpei Numata: And both are bad-tempered.

    Oden-ya no onna: You're a real nuisance.

Sanpei Numata: My wife says so too.
