uncontrollable human nature

I saw the book "Out of Control Jury" in the school library a long time ago, and only knew that it was a best-selling novel. But given that it is too thick, there is no urge to read it. It was only later that I learned that the author of the novel, John Grisham, was famous, and his "The Gannet Assassination Order" and "The Killing Hour" were also adapted into movies. After seeing this movie, I thought that I could finish reading a book in two short hours, which is not bad.

At the beginning of the story, there is a wily barrister, Lankin Finch, who has the ability to grasp people's hearts and reverse right and wrong. Rather, it's the ability to sway a court's runaway jury. Before he took over this case, he had already achieved a lot of victories, and many cases that caused public outrage with solid evidence would vanish as soon as he took over. This time he took on the case of a widow suing an arms dealer.

I don't understand the jury system abroad very well. The judge feels that it is only the person who plays the role of the final judgment, and whether the defendant is guilty or not depends on those people in the jury. They are the crux of the whole lawsuit. So jury members became the object of contention between the prosecution and the defense. Before the official hearing, both the prosecution and the defense can participate in the selection of jury members together. The first confrontation between the prosecution and the defense of the film appeared here. The lawyer Wen Dao Ruhr played by Dustin Hoffman, in tandem with Lankin Finch, judged the candidates one by one, obviously Ruhr's understanding of people only stays On the surface, the sharp blue and gold dissects into the heart of man. And seem to fully grasp the human frailties of these jury members. Although the upright Ruhr has the support of many people on the surface, but there is no chance of winning, it can be said that the situation is a bit one-sided.

But at the same time, a mysterious man named Nick East, who would later become Juror No. 9, appeared in the candidacy. His eyes were completely unpredictable. Lan Jin chose him hesitantly. Then Nick became a key figure in turning things around.

With the opening of the court and the deepening of the case trial, Lan Jin found that the seamless plan originally arranged did not go as smoothly as he imagined. A jury member was dismissed for drinking, and one of his leading figures, a retired military officer, didn't make much of a difference. But he himself was threatened by a woman named Mary. She is the girlfriend of the mysterious No. 9 juror Nick. Even if Lan Jin counterattacked and tried to kill the two of them, he still failed in the end. And the two people who made him fall short were the families of the victims of another case he defended against arms dealers that year.

There is a very deep line in the movie. Lan Jin asked Nick why he mastered those jurors. Nick replied, I didn't want to influence them, but let them find out the wrong side. Blue Gold, who has always been invincible, has forgotten that everyone has their own values, and may be confused for a while but will not be absolutely controlled. Although human nature is greedy and there are loopholes in the law, there are variables in everything before it is formed, and it can change even at the last second.

Finally, let's talk about the performance of the actors. Rachel Waits plays a more aggressive and determined woman in this film. It feels a bit similar to the character in The Immortal Gardener. Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman, the two old actors, are not to be mentioned. There is such a foundation that they are naturally worth seeing, but they are both determined by their appearance to play the role of the type. Wherever Dustin goes, he feels a little simple and honest. John Cusack, although he hasn't been able to make a big splash, is still a good actor.

Runaway Jury quotes

  • Nicholas Easter: Goodbye, Fitch.

Rankin Fitch: Well, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait... How did you swing 'em, huh? How did you swing 'em your way? I hear you got ten votes. How'd you do that?

Nicholas Easter: [shrugs] I didn't swing anything. I just stopped you from stealing the thing. We let 'em vote their hearts. That means you lose. Enjoy your drink.

  • Wendell Rohr: Is that why you're doing this? To protect the constitution, is that it?

Rankin Fitch: Of course not. I'm in it to win.

    Wendell Rohr: Oh.

Rankin Fitch: Just like you are.

    Wendell Rohr: Yeah.

Rankin Fitch: Because that's what I was hired to do.

    Wendell Rohr: Uh huh.

Rankin Fitch: Everything else is colored bubbles.

Wendell Rohr: Colored bubbles! Colored bubbles? A system that calls for twelve people to sit and listen to testimony of witnesses, fella, and that includes my witness, who you've disappeared!

Rankin Fitch: If you're relying on testimony to win this case, you've already lost it.
