It's not so much that he's crazy, it's that he's pathetic. It is only in a place far from human beings that he can find the life he wants, a heroic life. He is a severely mentally handicapped person, but this does not prevent him from being a person who has made a great contribution to the study of brown bears. Basically, his pursuit of the brown bear is not for scientific research, but a kind of inquiry akin to religious belief, and of course, mixed with his desire to take the opportunity to achieve a dream that he could not achieve as an actor - to make his own film.
