Director: Lisa Cholodenko Stars
: Radha Mitchell; Ally Sheedy; Patricia Clarkson
Story: Pictorial editor Syd, frustrated with her career and love (with her boyfriend), soaks in the bathtub depressedly and sees the seepage ceiling. She went upstairs to ask, and met Lucy, a former famous photographer who is still exploring the art of photography by herself. Syd gradually entered Lucy's small circle, which brought her not only avant-garde photography, but also drugs and a gay romance with Lucy.
Comments: This film is visually excellent. It seems that every shot has been carefully designed, and the composition, color, and lighting all give people a very cool feeling. Without a lot of deliberate performance, the play seems real, which of course is likely to be a matter of opinion. There are more scenes of drug use in the film, and the tone of decadent life is probably arranged, but it is dirty and offensive. The repressed tragic ending shows the director's purpose: a romance of any gender, in the face of ambition, drug addiction, and a life of decadence, will be a mess.
I said: I like it. Love the feel of Ally Sheedy. I like the smooth feel of the movie.
Ask myself: what did I do in 1998?
A: Maybe you didn't appreciate it at that time.
