Bad Education: Knowable Desires, Unknown Human Nature

A good movie, I always thought, should not be obscure preaching or gibberish. As a commercial product produced by industry, the primary responsibility of the film and its narrative is to entertain people's eyes and ears, to make the words clear, and to tell the story wonderfully. On this basis, it is the only way to make a classic film by regenerating feelings about life and the world, and expressing the creator's own feelings. Counting the master figures in the history of cinema, from Orson Welles to Hitchcock, from Francis Coppola to Spielberg, is the case.
Almodóvar is no exception.
Although his films are full of transvestites, transgenders, homosexuality, SM, murder, violence, etc., but his expression of these borderline subjects is so smooth and natural, without the slightest twist and pretense - to say Simple and not nauseating. For example, in "Bad Education", the entangled homosexual love among several characters is direct, ordinary, and generous.
It is also the same as the ordinary love between men and women, the homosexual love in "Bad Education" has the same intricate relationship: the handsome young Ignacio and Enrique fall in love in the monastery, in order to protect their lover, Iger Nacio endured the abuse of Father Moreau; many years later, Enrique became a famous film director, and Ignacio asked him to shoot a film about his personal experience, and the two relived their old relationship; but at this time, the old Father Moreau appeared again Now, from his mouth, another story is narrated...
Several love stories between gays and lesbians, among which are also nested with abnormal love, betrayal, conspiracy, and suspense. What we see is no longer simple homosexuality, but a deeper analysis of human nature: the priest seems to be the source of all evil, his pedophilia ruined Ignacio's life, and later fell in love with Juan , although deformed but sincere and eager, this love was eventually used by Juan; Ignacio was undoubtedly the victim, but his self-defeating and later blackmailing of the priest ruined his life; Juan used his brother and Enrique, also used the priest, but his hatred of Ignacio is not without reason, we can imagine how much humiliation he suffered because of such a brother... So, everyone is guilty, And everyone is worthy of sympathy. Here, Almodovar goes beyond the question of sex and love, and focuses on showing the complexity and change in the depths of human nature.
As long as you watch this movie, you will definitely remember Ignacio's pure and beautiful childhood voice. The first time I heard the children's version of "Moon River", I also felt agitated. The soundtrack is beautiful and moving. It is rare to see Almodovar using slow motion. He must be quite fond of this MTV. It is recommended that you look for the OST of this film, I believe it is a record worthy of collection.
Another impressive thing is his explicit description of sex. As mentioned just now, Almodóvar's description of marginalized groups is very direct and never concealed, which may be related to his own homosexuality. But the direct writing of sex in the film may surprise some viewers. Gay men's sexuality, I don't think I need to go into details. In addition to not directly photographing specific organs, Almodovar did not shy away from showing it.
Schopenhauer said that life is a mass of desires. When desires are satisfied, they are boring. If they are not satisfied, they are painful. Therefore, life oscillates between pain and boredom. Almodóvar's story is a typical swing between pain and boredom. Ultimately, his reluctant obsession and questioning of desire makes his films strong and gorgeous, yet melancholic and unsettling. The priest looked at Juan's trembling lips, and Enrique looked at the depressed expression of "Ignacio" when he took off his underwear... The more calm the undercurrent in his heart, the more surging power he felt.
Looking back, perhaps the most attractive thing about this film is his plot structure and the marginality of the subject matter: the story has Hitchcock's ingenuity, but it can also walk in the space of subculture, and clearly show personal characteristics. The movie is exciting enough, but the gloomy and complicated human nature expressed in it makes people feel unspeakably chilling.

  • Ignacio: I think I've just lost my faith at this moment, so I no longer believe in God or hell. As I don't believe in hell, I'm not afraid. And without fear I'm capable of anything.
