It's all about a covert war between a black student and a black female teacher. Like what happened to Luce, trained as a child soldier in Africa, adopted by a white couple in USA, cicatrized through mental appease for years, brilliant in speech and sprint , but under suspicion of carrying fireworks in his locker, initiative of violence in his paper, sexual assault to his former Asian girlfriend, all those denounced by his teacher Harriet Wilson, who reports to Luce's parents and principal of high school, gets revenge and set up from Luce's coterie instead, finally loses her job... No one is guilty, if we consider the fire as a mischief, but everyone has his/her own heart knot, suffered from his/her childhood, family of origin, relatives, skin color, distrust, reflection in others'eyes... When you harbor someone that you love, you should be ready to face all the unknown consequences... Everything doesn't look like what it used to be and should be any more...

It is thought-provoking because of the depth of the discussion, and confusing because of the shallowness of the discussion. Just like the first shot at the beginning that is very important to the plot but restricts the angle of view, the whole film has no ultimate answer in the end, and even the cable is unwilling to give more: we are looking forward to the truth, but the film is showing characters one after another. In the relationship with increasingly complex characters, the inner drive of the plot was actively thrown away, and in the end only a few keys close to the theme were left: each key can open a door, but every room behind the door appears too small .

Sundance saw that now, the one with the loudest applause at the end, almost no one left the Q&A. This book, the protagonist is replaced by a white man, is equally powerful. Relatable, realistic, profound, provocative, too much to swallow.
