Everything doesn't look like what it used to be and should be any more

It's all about a covert war between a black student and a black female teacher. Like what happened to Luce, trained as a child soldier in Africa, adopted by a white couple in USA, cicatrized through mental appease for years, brilliant in speech and sprint , but under suspicion of carrying fireworks in his locker, initiative of violence in his paper, sexual assault to his former Asian girlfriend, all those denounced by his teacher Harriet Wilson, who reports to Luce's parents and principal of high school, gets revenge and set up from Luce's coterie instead, finally loses her job... No one is guilty, if we consider the fire as a mischief, but everyone has his/her own heart knot, suffered from his/her childhood, family of origin, relatives, skin color, distrust, reflection in others'eyes... When you harbor someone that you love, you should be ready to face all the unknown consequences... Everything doesn't look like what it used to be and should be any more...

The director is very ambitious, portraying a sad figure destroyed by the public impression in multiple dimensions such as political stance, sexism, racial anxiety, and family values. The narrative means echoes the character of the characters, and presents another truth by hiding the truth: everyone only believes what "oneself" believes, but this belief is based on subjective judgments rather than objective facts. No matter how good Luce is, skin color is always the original sin. His future success will be a badge of self-proclaimed by white parents. His failure will be regarded as a reason for being black. "Being spoken" is already an answer. The first half is rather sloppy, and it gradually becomes fuller in the middle, creating a suspenseful atmosphere that adds to the film a lot. At the end, the anger and tearing on Luce's running face are the most impactful images in the film. It is the broken beast in the cage about to get out of the cage. The "vagueness" of Luce's character is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that it leaves enough space for the audience to think. The disadvantage is that the repeated family perspective greatly weakens the sense of substitution, which caused me to be unable to have an emotional resonance with Luce.

The script is solid, with Luce complicated by origins, historical background, new family background and the socio-political climate of America. By the end, you will understand that everyone is lying and that everything is a lie. The casting leads me to believe that "Luce" is a sequel to "Fun Games," only with a different skin color for the kids. It's a pity that Tim Roth's father role is not written in depth and has little play.

  • Luce Edgar: When I first met my mother, she couldn't pronounce my name. My father suggested that they rename me. They picked Luce, which means light.
