Undoubtedly, when this film came to China, the hype was still "naked" and "sex". However, there are so many nude scenes in the film that they can't arouse the interest of Americans. The box office is so sluggish. It can be seen that Americans have become accustomed to it. All are rushing. I still remember that a play called "Butterfly Flying Freely" was staged on the mainland two years ago, because at the end there was a scene where the female protagonist from Taiwan took off her clothes with her back to the audience and went up to the attic to find the male protagonist. Words like "passion" and "full nudity" are used, and what's even more funny is that there are savvy people selling binoculars at the ticket gate, so that the audience can see the last scene more clearly. It's really embarrassing.
Although the storyline of this play has been criticized as useless, I personally think it's quite okay, because I feel that the play made by this blond and blue-eyed man has a little oriental thinking. Is China strong enough to export culture? Several porn films I watched recently are trying to add Chinese elements, and even cite the writings of classical Chinese philosophers to explain the thinking of the characters in the films. The logic in this film is completely typical of the East: the book is established to establish the self-confessed fact, and the truth of the conflict comes from the mouth of the winner. It has the meaning of the ancient Chinese motto "win the king and defeat the pirates", and also has the American humor of impunity for evildoers. However, the story made up by this Westerner still cannot grasp the Eastern thinking, and the story made up is neither a simple and fierce conflict of the Western style, nor the suspenseful logic of the interlocking of the East. Therefore, this work is like Beijing West Railway Station, neither Chinese nor Western, neither local nor foreign. Nature watchers also despise more and praise less.
Perhaps the elements of Eastern culture have really become something that Westerners are curious about and explore, but frankly speaking, Westerners are really slow and lack-eyed when it comes to appreciating Eastern culture.
