The first scene, the rehearsal of the musical, the appearance of bjork's ordinary shape and extraordinary voice determines the tone of the film. The heroine is just an immigrant living on the fringes of society. She came to the United States from the Czech Republic during the Cold War era, and only For the son not to repeat his fate. This kind of story is in line with Dogme95's principles, but such a movie will not have any audience, so the director chose Bjork and the musical under the daydream, and the film has been sublimated on the premise of being close to reality.
In fact, daydreaming is not necessarily a part of reality, but few people can elevate daydreaming to such a height as bjork in the show. With just a little rhythm, a little music, and even a little imagination, she can use all the elements around her to compose an original scene musical for herself. Killing Bill in excitement, criticizing Gene, counting every dollar she grabbed, she was a mother. But when she puts down all the burdens, she prefers to use her imagination as a child. Moments before provisional, the fear of death had made her lose her mind, but in the end, when Kathy brought the news of Gene's surgery, bjork unloaded all the burdens and re-entered the daydream of ego, into death in her sleep.
As one of Trier's conscience trilogy, dancer in the dark is more about the humanity of ordinary people in reality. But because of Bjork's intervention, the surface reality and the imagined reality are constantly intertwined, giving the film a fairy tale feel and making the film closer to reality, at least in my eyes.
Life is a tragedy, and the ending and the process are destined to be pale. If there is anything that can wash away the dullness of the process, I can only think of daydreams.
