Changes in my view of Germany

I used to dislike modern Germany very much.

Junkers nobility, militarism, iron and blood, The Last Lesson, Gas War, Unrestricted Submarine Warfare, Mein Kampf, National Socialism, Auschwitz, Anne's Diary, all of which run through Germany for hundreds of years Each of the nouns of history is full of darkness and sin. In my old opinion, the word Germany was as sinful as Mordor in The Lord of the Rings.

But when I first saw the movie, my opinion changed a lot. The German soldiers I saw were not hideous, bloodthirsty orcs, but normal-looking normal people, including well-educated, suave students. When the protagonist finally retreated with the old squad leader on the back of the enemy plane, I also prayed that they would come back safely, but in the end only one person survived. In the ending, the protagonist was shot and killed, which can be regarded as a kind of relief.

Of course, this does not mean that the nature of the war of aggression has changed in any way, but even if the people are not completely innocent, those who should be punished should be those who advocate hatred.

    9. The first sound military feature film, resolutely anti-war. No soundtrack, a serious attitude of monophonic mixing, 45min of trench offensive and defensive battles high camera overhead (50-foot boom), the visual effect of moving backwards is quite similar to the predecessor of the Steadicam long lens in "Road to Glory". One of the most shocking endings of the film: a close-up of Paul's dying hand twitching and hanging down. The meaning is timeless and great. 丨Comparing the two Western Front Wars, with regard to the performance of the war's impact on the characters, in 1918, at the end of the 1918, from the sidelines, an overview of some mentally typed expressions and the wailing group portraits of the hospital. This film designs the mental journey of the protagonist from the point of view of the protagonist and from the sidelines, a tone of sorrow that has gradually become popular, and by the way, it also satirizes the leisure class behind. 737

All Quiet on the Western Front quotes

  • Hair-peak soldier: And manufacturers. They get rich.

    [murmurs of agreement]

Albert Kropp: I think it's more a kind of fever. Nobody wants it in particular, and then all at once, there it is. We didn't want it. The English didn't want it. And here we are fighting.

  • Albert Kropp: Ah, the French certainly deserve to be punished for starting this war.

Detering: Everybody says it's somebody else.

Tjaden: Well. how do they start a war?

Albert Kropp: Well, one country offends another.

Tjaden: How could one country offend another?

Tjaden: You mean there's a mountain over in Germany gets mad at a field over in France?

    [Everyone laughs]

Albert Kropp: Well, stupid, one people offends another.

Tjaden: Oh, well, if that's it, I shouldn't be here at all. I don't feel offended.

Katczinsky: It don't apply to tramps like you.

Tjaden: Good. Then I could be goin' home right away.

Paul Bäumer: Ah, you just try it.

Katczinsky: Yeah. You wanna get shot?

    Tjaden: The kaiser and me...

    [the others laugh]

Tjaden: Me and the kaiser felt just alike about this war. We didn't either of us want any war, so I'm going home. He's there already.

Hair-peak soldier: Somebody must have wanted it. Maybe it was the English. No, I don't want to shoot any Englishman. I never saw one 'til I came up here. And I suppose most of them never saw a German 'til *they* came up here. No, I'm sure *they* weren't asked about it.

    Paul Bäumer: No.

Detering: Well, it must be doing somebody some good.

Detering: Not me and the kaiser.

Hair-peak soldier: I think maybe the kaiser wanted a war.

Tjaden: You leave us out of this!

Katczinsky: I don't see that. The kaiser's *got* everything he needs.

Hair-peak soldier: Well, he never had a war before. Every full-grown emperor needs one war to make him famous. Why, that's history.

Paul Bäumer: Yeah, generals, too. They need war.
