The double interweaving of lonely tragedy and absurd comedy

A bunch of spotlights, a red curtain, a fixed lens, a man who is slightly at a loss and has a strange pronunciation, like a clumsy clown entertaining passersby under the light loop, the spotlight is thrown from overhead and hits the actors. The light and shadow are like a full moon, guiding the audience into the well-designed comedy trap. The passers-by laughed and applauded, but no one noticed that the protagonist who made the curtain call under the lights had already lost his smiling face. The opening scene of the film sets the tone of the film's absurdity. The eccentric protagonist in the black-and-white lens carefully talks to the audience, breaking the shackles of the fourth wall and creating a grand sense of desolation and nothingness beyond the absurdity. From the music and subtitles that were interrupted at the same time when the disc was blocked, to the slightly bewildered DJing of the protagonist, to the fifteen-second black scene, the audience's appetite was completely whetted. The protagonist who suddenly appeared in the lower right corner returned to the screen in a way beyond the audience's imagination, which made the audience admire its ingenious design, and at the same time, there was a little trick among friends, which gave it a sense of game to play with the audience. And invites the audience to experience the life of a character full of absurdities. Facing the wall full of characters and wallpapers, Andy in his childhood shouted loudly and hoarsely in front of the empty wall with enthusiasm. His love for music or art does not need to be shared and borne by others, the only person he pleases is himself. And his audience is also the next-door sister under his control of the doll monk who has no thought and spiritual power. Although they even had an unsolved problem in language communication before, so what? What binds them together is a sincere emotion that has not been distorted by external forces. With the sound of the little boy's fingers plucking the strings, the role in the little girl's mouth became the image of middle-aged Andy, completing the double span of time and place. But the boring talk show put the whole scene into an embarrassing situation. From a little girl to a group of numb unfamiliar faces, Andy's helpless eyes showed a kind of protective color for revealing himself to the outside world. Whether it is the boss's mandatory requirements or the five-year contract, Andy is restraining him to passively please the audience on his stage. But no matter what, Andy's pleasure is always himself. He will use a video to make the audience think that the TV is broken to make fun of the audience, and he will read a whole book of Shakespeare in a hoarse voice before the official stage. Andy stood under the spotlight, in front of the stage, above the moon, and in the midst of life, but he found that just like Jingwei reclaiming the sea, the persistence of the camera and the anger of the audience made him different from the silver screen. The previous audience finally realized that he tried everything he could and could not fill the gap between the audience and the stage. People on the moon are lonely, and the controller will eventually feel tired one day, so fate, the real controller, quietly announced the death penalty to his life. No one believed this grand ending. He was a person who was good at teasing others, both inside and outside the play, and entertaining himself while teasing the audience. But when he was tricked by fate and yawned with the tired audience, he was at a loss in the moonlight, with the child who only cared about self-pleasure. He traveled thousands of miles to a foreign land in an attempt to redeem himself through sorcery. The seemingly foolproof operation turned out to be a hoax from start to finish. The distance between the doctor and Andy is the same as the distance between the actor and the stage, but one day this delicate balance is broken, and there is nothing but dismay and self-deprecation. Andy was laughing wildly on the operating table, and the picture overlapped with Andy at the funeral. This time Andy took off all the disguise, revealing his sober self in revelry and confusion. Like the child who pointed out the situation in front of the wallpaper, sincere enthusiasm. Only an empty head was exposed under the red quilt. This time, he completely lost his identity as the controller. Bitterness and confusion surrounded him, the moon was like dust, and the brightness was not there. At this time, the audience suddenly realized that the audience had been in Andy's funeral all the time, in the memory of Andy. This peculiar closed loop makes the audience's sympathy and memory for Andy reach a new height. After the end of the absurd comedy, Andy's lonely tragedy is succeeded. Behind the end of the happy field, we can only see our own appearance on the black screen.

Man on the Moon quotes

  • Andy Kaufman: I hate sitcoms, George. They're just... stupid jokes... and canned laughter! And you don't know why it's there, but it's there. And... and that's DEAD people laughing! Did you know that? Those people are dead!

  • [Tony is mocking people who came to see his show]

Tony Clifton: How you doing? You enjoying the show?

    Bob Zmuda: [nervously] Yeah.

    Tony Clifton: What's your name?

    Tony Clifton: Bob?

    [mockingly]

Tony Clifton: Bob! What's your last name, "Up-and-down-in-the-water"?

    Bob Zmuda: Gorsky.

    Tony Clifton: Gorsky? That Polish?

    Bob Zmuda: Yeah.

Tony Clifton: You trying to do Polish humor?

    Bob Zmuda: No, that's...
