Bank robbing is a common plot in movies. The general impression of bank robbers is young, agile, and strong. But there is a movie in which three old grandfathers with arthritis, ventilation, and kidney problems, because they need money, have a whim and plan to rob a bank. The three performed a hilarious and warm comedy.
Joe, Willie, and Al are three retired steel workers in their 80s who live on pensions. The three are best friends who have known each other for twenty-five years. All of a sudden, all of these retired workers, because of the steel company merger, couldn't keep getting their pensions. The economy of the three elderly people is in dire straits.
Joe, lives with his divorced daughter and granddaughter. My daughter is a nursing assistant with a meager salary. The granddaughter is still in school. Joe uses his pension to pay off his home loan. Just as the bank raised the interest rate on the loan, Joe lost his pension. Joe faces the dilemma of being homeless with his daughter and granddaughter.
Willie has severe kidney disease. Current dialysis has little effect. The only way to get better is with a kidney transplant. But due to the high cost of surgery and the lack of a kidney source, Willie was unable to perform a kidney transplant. In order not to worry everyone, Willie concealed his illness from his friends around him, as well as his daughter and granddaughter from afar.
Al, after retiring, sometimes plays the saxophone in the bar, or teaches children to play the saxophone to earn a little extra money.
Joe finds that the interest on his home loan has suddenly increased, so he goes to the bank in doubt. But on the bank's side, there is apathy and a clear shirking of responsibility. Joe was outraged when a bank robbery took place. Joe watched as the robbers snatched $1.6 million in minutes. After that, the police did not solve the case as quickly as in the TV series. Instead, the case was put on hold due to a lack of leads.
From this day on, a thought loomed in Joe's mind.
One evening not long after, Joe and Al celebrated Willie's birthday at a cheap restaurant near the neighborhood. Together, the two gave Willie a watch as a birthday present. The pattern on the dial is a photo of Willie's granddaughter thousands of miles away.
When Al and Willie were complaining about the unpalatable food in the restaurant, Joe, who had been silent next to him, suddenly said, "I might rob a bank."
Willie and Al think Joe is joking.
Joe took out a letter from the bank: If he couldn't repay the loan within a month, the house would be taken away. And Willie and Al are also bankrupt. Nor could they have the money to lend Joe.
Joe told his hatred of banks: "Banks actually ruined the country. They destroyed the dreams of many people, but they were unscathed." Then he joked: "We three old guys, rob a bank, get away, honorable. Retire. Worst case scenario, we get caught, we have a bed in the cell, three meals a day. Medical conditions are better than what we have now.”
Willie was persuaded by Joe after careful consideration. At worst, he thought, there was nothing left. But if it is successful, at least if you have money in the future, you can see your family more often. He comforted himself that he only took so much from his pension.
At first Al still refused to join. But then reports of banks and steel companies drew Al's ire. Al changed his mind.
Joe and Willie decided to go to the supermarket to steal something as a warm-up. The process is ridiculous.
Inexperienced Joe and Willie hide the stolen food directly in their clothes. They ran out of the supermarket, but did not find Al, who was supposed to be here. Two people on motorcycles were chased by supermarket security guards on the street. Finally got caught.
Joe concluded that they needed the guidance of a professional. So, Joe took Willie to find his ex-son-in-law Murphy, who has been doing nothing.
The two met a "professional" through Murphy. The owner of a pet store, Jesse. Jesse agrees to instruct the three on how to rob a bank for a quarter of the total.
Jesse crafts a heist plan for the trio. and instruct them to fully prepare for it. This includes preparing to get out of the car, learning the wire, exercising, making an alibi, getting equipment, practicing shooting, rehearsing, and timing.
Even during this period, the entertainment activities of the three were changed to watching the movie "Afternoon on a Hot Day" about bank robbery.
On the morning of the action, Joe told Murphy that if he could not come back safely, he must do his duty as a father to his granddaughter, Murphy's daughter.
The three started to act according to the plan.
The three first appeared at the carnival event some distance from the bank. Let the surveillance film them enter the haunted house or the bathroom at the carnival and never leave. This is how an alibi was created.
The three then slipped out the back door. Go to the bank in the prepared car. In order to prevent accidental injuries, the bullets of the gun were replaced with blank bullets.
The three put on their masks, walked into the bank, and locked the door. Threat to shoot. Start looting.
During the robbery, Willie saw a little girl with a baby in her arms. Then he thought of his distant granddaughter. He couldn't help but chat a little with this little girl who didn't know what they were doing. Suddenly, Willie suffered a kidney attack and fell to the ground. The little girl thought Willie was too hot because of the mask, so she ripped off half of his mask. Then the little girl was stopped by her mother, who had turned pale with fright. The little girl looked down and saw the watch on Willie's wrist with his granddaughter's photo printed on it.
Packing the money, the three hurried away. Before Willie escaped, he did not forget to instruct the little girl to go to school well.
The next day, the police found the three of them based on clues. But they all have perfect alibi.
The police figured out a way. They brought in the little girl holding the doll at the crime scene to identify the culprit.
The little girl was in the middle of the line of suspects and recognized Willie at a glance. Also saw the special watch that Willie was wearing.
But, unexpectedly, the little girl grabbed the policeman next to her and said, "I didn't see him. He's not here."
And just like that, the bank robbery was a success. They distributed some of the money to those around them who needed it. For example, the waitress at the restaurant you frequent, the elderly in the community.
Al, who learned of Willie's condition, donated a kidney to Willie. Willie and Al went through the surgery successfully.
After the operation, Al married his grandmother, Annie. Joe addresses the wedding.
After the wedding, Al shared the feelings the three shared: "I have a very strange feeling. I think that may be happiness."
