At the beginning, I have to say I do not understand the film totally because the film mentioned many knowledges about politics, culture and history. In this way, some comments in the essay may be full of basis. Please forgive poor me.
According to the film, I define the culture in the film as a gentleman culture. During the whole film, all men act like gentlemen, talking about things in a pretty polite way. However, this culture is showing the fake of the people and it prisons people's personality. For example, MR. Stevens (the main role) in the film could not cry when his father dead because Stevens had to insist on his works. Moreover, it reflects the acting skill of Anthony Hopkins. Ignoring the film, we have to permit his is an excellent actor in UK.
Many plots in the film were used to describe the politics, economics in that time. Many famous meetings happened in the castle. Moreover, Lord Darling support Nazi because one of his best friends was German and Darlington unemployed two Jews. It is hard to judge the right of wrong for the behavior of MR Stevens even Lord Darlington. It is because we do not live at that time. Therefore, I do not want to criticize the MR Stevens and Lord Darlington.
As for the love, I do not think it is a film about love and I forget the name of the female. The film mainly indicates the changes of the MR Stevens. At the beginning, MR Stevens always follows the order of Lord Darlington. Gradually , he began to read classic love fiction and sometimes he would discuss the economic and politic problems with the guests.
In conclusion, I do not think it is a story about love but it shows many aspects of English lives. If people fancy English lifestyle, it is worth to watch.
