American Color Story Films

The Art of Self Defense - Movies are getting harder and harder to categorize, reflecting the main contradiction in the current film industry, the contradiction between the people's growing cunning taste and the old formula of the genre + the flood of sequels. Just as you'd be hard-pressed to categorize Midsommar as a horror film, The Art of Self Defense isn't a typical action movie—don't be fooled by the karate moves in the trailer. Only then did I realize that the "American Color Story Films" in the state-run movie theaters as a child was a good label.

Let's talk about the plot, the seemingly ridiculous script is actually solid and rigorous, and it should be a very good drama with a little modification. At the moment when the big heroine drama is blowing out, it is particularly important for the "little hero" drama to appear as a mirror image. Because nerd/sissies and oppressed women are two sides of the same coin in a strong, male-dominated culture of masking. Can't quite agree that this is a parody of Fight Club. In contrast, the fight in Fight Club is more expansive and wanton, it's revenge, it's "take back our territory". So very aggressive, the protagonist did not hesitate to join the conspiracy. The moral coordinates of this film are very different, and the "self-defense" in the name is an important hint. In fact, in terms of language and philosophy, it has striking similarities with the first season of "Frozen", but I won't spoil it here.

The most surprising thing is the story of the tyrant’s inheritance that echoes from the beginning to the end. This little twist that won my heart helped the film to transcend the stereotype of parody, erected its own banner, and the criticism suddenly became profound and three-dimensional. .

69/100 In this story about the dojo, Jesse Eisenberg was so hard at it that he couldn't pull it off at all. But at least the creators made it more or less humorous in the structure of the genre film, so it wasn't too boring.

Spicy yet witty satire, deconstructing "masculinity" and piggybacking on "male power". Magazines, guns, karate, belts, metal music, German/German shepherds, all became male symbols and were magnified. Karate is for the weaker.

The Art of Self-Defense quotes

  • Casey: I'm going to kill you, Leslie.

[Sensei looks at Casey with surprise]

Casey: That's right. I found out your real name is Leslie. I called you that to make you angry. When you think about it, Leslie is a lot more feminine sounding than Casey.

  • Sensei: If a bear's forest catches on fire, the bear is still a bear. Even if a boat capsizes in rough seas and sinks to the bottom of the ocean with no survivors, it is still a boat.
