This is a movie I watched at this year's New Zealand International Film Festival. I thought it was just an appetizer, but I didn't expect this appetizer to be so rushed (four sounds).
The film tells the story of a guerrilla teenager guarding an American prisoner at a mountain base somewhere in Latin America. These Boy Scouts have been trained (washed) and trained (brain) since childhood, and the difference in age/body has obviously become the default rule of the superiors and subordinates. The older, bulkier is of course the head. They have the same growth reflection, rebelliousness, youthful sprouting, and occasionally show innocence, but they are trained to be killing machines.
The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 35th Sundance Film Festival.
If you don't consider the story, just from the perspective of scenery, from the mountains and clouds to the rainforest rapids, it can be regarded as a very good scenery film. But the "reality" in the movie is not like this, it is not safe here.
The film's soundtrack is very unique, with scenes where the monkeys are trained and a somewhat dance-like physical "performance", and most importantly their Commando, a little dwarf but muscular man and his voice become a strong contrast, visual and hearing are very impactful. This feeling may only be felt in a movie theater.
This is a bit like a movie I've seen before, the African Boy Scouts movie "Johnny the Mad Dog". But this time it's Latin America.
When I saw the 15th minute of the movie I was thinking where did these kids come from and why they were trained (washed) and trained (brained) like this. Interestingly, the movie doesn't introduce any of the children's background history, until the end of the movie, when the monkeys capture the escaped companion Rambo, they shoot and kill the adult who saved Rambo, and hide the three children under the table, this scene I seem to have found the answer, these monkeys will eventually become kings on their own, even in small groups, and then they will "find" more monkeys, forming a cycle of terror.
They are no longer children, they are trained to be killing machines, although they have thoughts and emotions, they are still tamed to become monkeys, why do they fight, why do they fight, and for whom.
ps I think the actors are really dedicated and desperate to the crew. In a scene where the monkeys chased and killed Rambo and escaped, they all jumped into the rapids at the same time. This kind of scene, if one is not careful, the consequences will be unimaginable. And the captured actress, who was bitten by countless mosquitoes, really showed me the horror of mosquitoes in Yulin. This is why they can win awards. In addition to good movies, there is also the dedication of the actors, which is also very respectable. .
