True love ennobles a man.
"Like an Old Man Comes" is one of my favorite romance movies. The heroine Laura's husband returns after serving his sentence, only to discover that he is not her husband. They met, fell in love, and pretended to be the couple in front of the whole village. It was not until the real husband was held criminally responsible for the murder that the villagers discovered that the heroine's husband, Jack, had already died. The person who replaced him was Tang Haoli, who used to be a village teacher and a liar. Don Howrie fell in love with Laura and would rather be sentenced to death than admit to the judge that he is not Laura's husband Jack in law. Tang Haori was eventually hanged, and Laura took their children and went on with their lives. The church in the village was renovated and life continued peacefully.
The story is based on a true case in sixteenth-century France, but has been heavily adapted. In the real incident, the real husband Ma Dan did not die, but returned from the trial on wooden legs. Although the woman and the fake husband may have a love as support, the replacement is eventually hanged and "justice" is served.
I don't go into the ruthlessness of real events, because art has always been higher than life. I remember when I was in the third year of junior high school, I was deeply touched when I saw this movie for the first time. This is also my first movie disc. I revisited the film a few times over the years, with tears in my eyes each time. Don Howrie speaks generously in court, asking Laura to testify that he is Jack, her real husband. Laura wants to save his life, which at first staunchly denies. She said he was not her husband because she "never loved him as much as you". But in the end she finally admitted emotionally, and deep down, only Tang Haoli was her real husband. But at the same time, this also means that Tang Haori will be legally identified as Jack who committed murder and sentenced to hang.
Love is so beautiful, once you have tasted its sweetness, you cannot give up. If one day, the person you love goes to the ends of the earth, the person you love will follow without any regrets. Laura wants the person she loves to hug her and accompany her every day. She didn't want him to die, she couldn't bear his departure. But in the end, love made her brave. She respected the other party's choice, and when Tang Haoli was about to be executed, he appeared in the crowd under the gallows to give him the last courage and solace. Love made Tang Haoli noble, from a habitual cheater to a good man who loved his wife and children, and led the villagers to become rich. He would rather die than remain a legal husband. When I was a child, I thought that Tang Haoli was reluctant to admit that he was not Jack, so that the contract signed in Jack's name would not become a pile of waste paper, causing the villagers to go bankrupt. Growing up, I finally realized that it was only part of his wish. What he wanted was Laura's love, and what he wanted was Laura's status as a legal husband. Her love made his life more sublime, whole and meaningful. Although they live in a leaky house all day, they have never been happier than they are now. Being with the one you love every day is the happiest thing in the world! Love is the most worth pursuing and cherishing in this world, and I am willing to pursue it with my whole life. But I also know that it is unavoidable. Once I meet it, I will protect it with my life.
