shock

A long time ago, as if it was 1994, I saw the introduction of this film on a TV program, and was immediately moved by its story, not only because of its history, DVD was not as popular as VCD at that time, but I was impressed by its story. When I got the DVD version, I bought it without hesitation.

The story is about a little-known black corps during the American Civil War. They were ignored because of the racial discrimination at the time. This completely black infantry regiment was the 54th in Massachusetts. The Corps, headed voluntarily by white Colonel Robert, who trained 700 blacks from the lower ranks of society into well-equipped combat troops. Although the Civil War was for the rights of blacks, the 54th regiment had to deal not only with the southern army, but also with the discrimination of the white men in the northern army, and the most humble and lowly jobs always fell to them. They also have resentment, they also have dreams (maybe the word 'dream' is too vague, they just want to eat and have a safe place to live), and finally in a Southern California battle, they took the initiative to lead the attack by 1000 bunkers defended by the Confederate Army, they suffered heavy casualties, more than half of them died for the country.

MORGAN FREEMAN is an old drama, vividly portraying the stable, tough and upright image of the first black man in the Union Army to be appointed as a sergeant major. At the same time, the young black soldier played by DENZEL WASHINGTON, a black man who longs for freedom and resents the injustice of this world, knows clearly what it means to stand and fall forward at the end of his life. DENZEL also won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1989.

It is not the war that touches the soul, but their COURAGE & GLORY in the war!

The war scene is very magnificent, but I feel that the protagonist Matthew Broderick can't support this white officer. His baby-faced appearance is very interesting, and he plays against Freeman and Washington. It was set off very amateurishly. The final personal sacrifice is also deliberate. Although Denzel Washington in this film uses a consistent routine, it is still very appropriate to the role.

Although not as famous as "The Burning Years" and "Blood Diamond", I feel that this is Edward Zwick's best movie. The script is good. There are glory and dreams, but also despicableness and cruelty. Very passionate and very realistic. The emotional accumulation brought about by the progression of the story culminated in the bonfire spiritual song the night before the decisive battle. A few one-man shows by a young Denzel Washington made the superstar shine.

Maj. Cabot Forbes: What's that, Sergeant?

    [Forbes nods understandingly]
