"money"

How to obtain a complete narrative of the story content and characters' emotions with the shortest picture is a test of a director's scheduling ability. This is one of the proofs that Bresson can win the Palme d'Or for best director with this film.

From the small to the big, analyze a single scene to get a glimpse of the overall creative method of the story.

The young man used the money he just earned to eat at the restaurant, but when he was checking out, the waiter pointed out that his money was all counterfeit bills. The conflict gradually escalated in the quick-cut shots of the waiter rejecting the young man's counterfeit money again and again, and the air in the restaurant seemed to become stiff.

The whole frame of the frame is a close-up of the young man's hand. He tightly grasps the collar of the waiter, and then immediately releases it. His hand is shown by the camera to be huge and full of strength.

The scene stops at the trembling hand, which resembles the face of a young man—questioning, shocked, and angry; then the waiter slams into the table, and in the next shot, the young man is taken away by the police.

Bresson did not use a lot of pictures and dialogues between characters to describe this paragraph, and in a few simple shots, he vividly expressed what happened in the whole scene and the emotional changes of the characters.

You can't see all the details of this scene, but you know exactly what's going on in the restaurant.

Behind the succinct shots, cool tones, and calm pictures hide a turbulent story. "Money" is a film work with the director's personal style.

  • Yvon Targe: Wait. Everyone will be happy soon. I won't wait around for that. Believe me, it will bore us stupid. I want happiness now, on my terms.
