revenge

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is the first in Chan-wook Park's revenge trilogy. But when it was first released in 2002, it didn't have much influence (at least for me). It wasn't until 2003, when the second installment of the revenge trilogy, "Old Boy", caused a sensation, that "Revenge" regained everyone's attention.

"Revenge" mainly tells the story of two men, Ryu and Park, taking revenge on each other.

Ryu is deaf. At the beginning of the film, he wrote to the radio and asked them to read a letter to his sister, who was ill and needed a kidney transplant. He said to his sister, "My sister once said that when she died, she wanted to be buried by the river where they played together when she was a child. I promise you, but that will be forty or fifty years later. Now I must save my sister." When the letter was broadcast on the radio, Ryu sat on the rooftop with her sister, smiling and listening to the letter.

Ryu has a girlfriend he loves very much. In elementary school, this girl pretended to be a deaf person and entered the deaf school and became Ryu's roommate. Later, he was expelled from the school for the deaf because of the exposure of the deaf-mute thing. In the movie, when two people have sex at one time, the girl asks Ryu in dumb language, "When did you know we were destined?" Ryu silently replies in dumb language, "It started when we first met each

other 's eyes." A male protagonist, Park, is a typical hard-working man. He started as an engineer and has been the chairman of an electronic equipment company. During the recession, his wife left him. So he took care of his daughter alone. He loves his daughter very much and answers all her requests. Because his daughter would envy other children with mothers, he could only do his best to make his daughter envied by other children in other ways.

Yes, these are some very kind, very lovely people. But in the end they both died, beginning with unpredictable fickleness (almost brutal humor) and ending with raging vengeance.

There's a little "Color is Empty" style parody in the movie. Next to the room that Ryu and his sister shared were four single men. The four men couldn't help hearing the strange moaning of the woman next door. Four people stick to the wall and eavesdrop while masturbating. However, in reality, at another time on the wall, Ryu's sister was groaning in pain because of a seizure, and she was dying in pain on the ground. Ryu cooks noodles on the other side of the room, preparing dinner with his sister. Deaf, he didn't even notice that his sister in the same room was being tortured.

I think this little episode represents the style of the entire movie of Revenge. On the surface, the world is absurd to an unimaginable level, and the root of the absurdity is cruel and unrecognizable; the other side of the rippling warmth is the gradually approaching death. And no matter if the camera is absurd, tender, cruel or death, it is always a calm and indifferent.

In this absurd world, we can only warm each other with love. However, because of love and hate, the intensity of that hatred is even more crazy. Even if you kill them all, you can't get rid of the hatred in your heart, and you can't get back your lover. How painful is such hatred.

I think everyone who watches this movie will be struck by that deep hatred. It's chilling to see how those kind people turn into demons under hatred. However, I asked myself what if it was me. What should I do if the person I love the most is killed? I must admit, I will definitely get revenge, desperate revenge. This feeling is really uncomfortable. And I think that's the success of the movie "Revenge", he showed us, the darkness that hides in everyone's heart.

"Revenge" is not limited to people's inner self-examination, but also has its practical social significance. The contradiction at the beginning of the film comes from the gap between the rich and the poor in society, as well as the estrangement and misunderstanding between the two classes; and at the end of the film, the revenge of the terrorist political group is drawn. The main line of loneliness, estrangement, hatred, and violence in the film has been raised from the personal level to the social level, and the director's ambition can also be seen.

However I must admit that I don't really like the extension of this part. Due to the space factor, these social-level extensions are only superficial hints and cannot be explored in depth. I thought it lacked depth and also distracted the audience. The depiction of the group mentality of hatred should either not be touched explicitly, or should be interpreted more deeply, which should be better than the current arrangement.

In addition, there are also many loopholes in the details of the film. For example, when the organ dealer was wiped out, where did the girl lying on the operating table go afterward, which is puzzling. It can be seen that when the film was made, the production group was subject to a lot of restrictions in terms of time, money, and material. However, these did not prevent the film from being a masterpiece.

IMDB score of 7.7 (2881 votes) and I give it a 7.

The favorite of Park Chan-wook’s films, and the only one of his films that is speechless and convincing. From the character and plot setting to the plot advancement structure, twisted into a rope, the drama is powerful and full Vigorous.

Reviewing the film again after many years. "I know you are a good man, but I have to kill you". The absurd fates of the little people are intertwined, too depressing and desperate. Every shot, every detail is hard to breathe and hard to look straight at. In my mind, the best Korean movie of the past 10 years, no one
