Dreaming of Shaolin

I watched Huo Yuanjia today.

It is said to be Li's work of harvesting mountains.

Thinking of his first film, Shaolin Temple, which was my favorite film when I was a teenager, I wonder if I want to watch this last film. It has a beginning and an end. In particular, I watched the main creator's footage this morning, which made me even more curious about this film.

The story is about the process of a person growing into a hero, how a person has experienced the ups and downs of life, and realized the mission and meaning of his life.

The film is a very inspirational film, and there are also very touching clips, especially at the end, when I saw him vomit blood and still insist on the game, my tears still flowed down.

But after being moved, I wondered what is the meaning of competitive sports? Just like what Nong Jinsun said repeatedly in the film, even if you won the first place, so what? Even if the other party is a foreigner who looks down on us with arrogant words, is it just a Chinese who beat him down with martial arts, or convinces people with martial arts to make friends, can our country and our nation be able to get rid of the shame of poverty and backwardness? Just like today, if we win the most gold medals in the Olympic Games, can we prove that we are a powerful country in the East?

The breakthrough of this film compared with previous kung fu films is in the handling of foreign warriors. In the past, patriotic films always portrayed foreigners as heinous thugs. However, the two foreign warriors in this film showed noble character, knew that they lost, and admitted it generously. This is the solid foundation for Huo Neng to convince people with morality. (If you are facing a despicable villain, not only do you not appreciate your help, but also secretly hurt people and do anything to achieve your goals.) Especially the Japanese warrior is very awe-inspiring, and he finally yelled at the perpetrator. Huo's Japanese officials, you are really disgraceful to the Japanese! It is very different from the previous depiction of the Japanese as murderous demons without blinking an eye.

Perhaps Li wanted to use this to show that the distinction between good and evil is not about national races, but personal wishes.

Li's performance, in terms of martial arts, should be said to be very successful, which is his specialty. But in the portrayal of the characters, it still lost a few points. Especially at the beginning, when he showed Huo Zhengqiang's aggressive youthful spirit, his demeanor always reminded me of a person - Zhang Tielin. Oh, they are all men with dimples. When he was young, his dimpled smile was a little childish and shy, which was the cuteness of youth. But the age has grown, the smile has dimples, and with the wind and frost wrinkles at the corners of the eyes, it looks different.

Moreover, his voice could be heard as his own, and his expressiveness was weakened again. A slightly hoarse and thin voice was still a little powerless to express Huo Huo's heroic spirit. If the Shaolin Temple back then used his own voice, it is estimated that the influence would also be discounted. (Oh, don't laugh at me being a super voice lover. Whether a character's voice is good or bad, in my opinion, is a necessary part of a film's success.)

Another obvious flaw is that every The main character speaks like a person, with a tone of preaching and admonition.

It's not like telling a story, it's like telling a fable, everyone jumped out in a hurry and told the children, this story tells us that we should~~ I think Li has a lot to say, and wants to be in this closed door. The book contains as many life philosophies as possible. So he let these truths pop out of different people's mouths in each segment, without taking into account the natural elements that the development of the story itself should have. The lines are more like labels affixed to the characters, lacking due foreshadowing and transition.

Hehe, no matter what, it is still a film with ideas to be different.

In contrast, I still prefer the heroic romanticism of the Shaolin Temple, Li Zai's vigorous and vigorous body shape and the idyllic love shown in the film.

And the self at that time, sitting on the steps of the open-air plaza, full of immersion and ignorant happiness with the ups and downs of the story.
