Said (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman) are two young people from the Palestinian West Bank city of Nablus. They have been good friends since childhood, working together in a car repair shop. Said is quieter, while Khaled has a great temper and often has conflicts with customers but is relatively simple, thinking about jihad. Said's father was an Israeli collaborator (collaborator?), a collaborator in the eyes of the Arabs, and this background in his childhood also buried a postscript for his future behavior. Said met a girl Suha (Lubna Azabal) while repairing his car, and the two fell in love with each other. This emotional factor also affected Said's actions in the future. Suha is the daughter of a respected jihadist leader in Palestine, and the leader himself should have died in jihad. Suha was born in Europe, grew up in Morocco, and was educated in the West, so his words and deeds are closer to those of Western anti-war people, and he plays a role similar to a moral questioner in the film.
In fact, Said and Khaled have been the body bombs chosen by a Palestinian resistance group for two years. They have been trained, including how to avoid the inspection of Israeli security personnel,…………

The film uses the subjective perspective of human beings to lead the audience to understand their psychological changes, the collapse and reconstruction of beliefs in this whole event. The theme of the film is very convincing, but the form of expression is lacking in tension. Too many other people's dialogue and the static description of the old eyes can only make the audience have their own experience. As for Israel, I have always had no sympathy for this country built on national beliefs after World War II. In the process of settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, it seems to have played a very positive role in promoting the atrocities against innocent civilians. As said in the film, "the victim will eventually become the executioner", oh, the cycle goes back and forth, never ending

As outsiders, we are not qualified to judge Palestine and Israel as right or wrong, I just feel that the power of religion is something we non-believers will never be able to comprehend.

Paradise Now quotes

  • Car Owner: It's still crooked.

    Said: What?

    Car Owner: It's still crooked.

    Said: What, the bumper?

    Car Owner: What else?

    Said: It's brand new.

Car Owner: Maybe, but it's still crooked.

Said: I'll take another look at it, sir.

Car Owner: What for? It's crooked!

    Said: I don't think so.

Car Owner: Are you saying I'm blind?

Said: No, but you might be mistaken. Looks can be deceiving.

Car Owner: My eyes are fine, and thank God for that.

    Said: And it's not crooked.

Car Owner: Yes, it is! It's fucking crooked!

    Khaled: No, it's not.

Car Owner: Get Abu Salim and have him look at it.

    Khaled: It's not crooked. You're probably cross-eyed.

Car Owner: What did you say?

Khaled: It's straight at a ruler.

Car Owner: Go get Abu Salim. He'll tell you.

Said: I'll check it with a level.

[he takes a level and gives it to Khaled, who checks it]

Car Owner: So who's cross-eyed now?

Said: You are, sir. See? The ground's uneven, but the bumper's straight.

Car Owner: Are you trying to screw me over? I can see it myself.

  • Khaled: Israel views partnership with and equality for the Palestinians under the same democratic system as suicide for the Jewish state. Nor will they accept a two-state compromise even though that is not fair to the Palestinians. We are to either accept the occupation forever or disappear. We've tried with all possible means to end the occupation with political and peaceful means. Despite it all, Israel continues to build settlements, confiscate land, Judaize Jerusalem and carry out ethnic cleansing. They use their war machine and their political and economical might to force us to accept their solution: that either we accept inferiority, or we will be killed.
