Tragically Brilliant

This film is full of stark contrasts and maximizes sadness/hope!

1) The painting style is like a children's cartoon book, with bright colors, depicting the beautiful countryside and simple and lovely old couples; the real face is revealed in the middle - a sad and desperate movie.

2) The old man honestly followed the pamphlet issued by the government to do the pre-war preparedness work, although he didn’t understand what it meant. For example, the door panel was placed against the wall at an angle of 60 degrees. Why did the government pamphlet say to prepare a paper bag to put on his body? But I fully trust the government and everything is ready to go. In the end, the atomic bomb dropped, food and water were gone, and there was still no doubt that the government would send someone to rescue them, but they didn't wait until they died.

3) The old couple is portrayed so innocently, innocently, and full of hope. In the end they died in hope and prayer.

These strong contrasts infinitely magnify the impact of the film, and the stamina is so strong that it is not good to watch the whole person.

One of the dialogues perfectly illustrates this contrast:

(The government booklet said to prepare paper bags to cover themselves, and the old couple prepared them. After several days after the war, water and food were cut off, and the two suffered from nuclear radiation. Their lives were about to come to an end. The paper bag hasn't been used yet, no matter what the reason, let's get in it anyway)

Hilda: Ooh, it's stuffy in these bags.
Jim: Now you know what it feels like to be a potato. Now you know what it feels like to be a potato.
Hilda: [chuckles] I should hate that, being buried in the ground. [laughs] I'm sure I don't like being buried in the ground
Jim: Oh yes, so would I, give me cremation every time.
Hilda: Oh me too.
Even the soundtrack for this scene is horrifying.

The old couple kept themselves safe, innocent, and loved each other deeply. They prepared meticulously according to the government pamphlet, and the house was bombed in a mess. But whoever was spared by the war, still suffered from nuclear radiation and ran out of ammunition and food, and prayed to die together.

All in vain!

Even the stamina after reading it has become a contrast. After watching the sadness and despair that swept over, I began to be grateful for life.

When the atomic bomb exploded, the old couple took it for granted that they tried to turn on the TV, radio, get water to make tea, and wait for the milkman to deliver the milk. . . And then found that all these things that are usually available have become extravagant wishes. People can't help cherishing everything they have, even playing mobile phones, going to convenience stores, and being able to contact friends at any time... The simplest things in life have become very precious. Life is only so short, like the wind life blows away.

Vignette:

The soundtrack was specially created for the film by top musicians: David Bowie, Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), Genesis.

The theme song at the beginning of the film When The Wind Blows was written and sung by David Bowie.

Also not mentioned about the film is a song called When The Wind Blows by Mansun. (Fan filter) I think this song fits the feel of the movie better.

When I was a kid, I saw an animated movie about an old couple living through a nuclear bomb. I wrote songs about this anime in a book for several years because I was really touched at the time. Bought a graphic novel of this anime and wrote the song after reading it. This is one of my favorite tracks from all the EPs we've released. - Paul Draper, frontman of Mansun

Attached are the lyrics of the two songs of the same name:

When The Wind Blows - David Bowie

So long child, I'm on my way
Goodbye boy, I'm on my way
And after all is done, after all is done
After things have become porridge, after things have become porridge
Don't be down, it's all in the past
Don't be sad, it's all over
Though you may be afraid
Although you will be afraid
So long child, it's awful dark
goodbye child, so dark
And I've never felt the sun
I have never felt the sun
I dread to think of when
i'm afraid to think
When the wind blows
When the wind blows
When the wind blows
When the wind blows
when the wind blows
Life burns a savage wound, angry and wrong
Life burns cruel wounds, anger and fault
Trusting a twisted word, you'll run, run away
Spit out twisted words and you'll run, flee
You'll take him home
you will take him home
You'll spit and taunt him
you will spit and laugh at him
But they won't believe you
but they won't believe you
No matter what you'll say
whatever you say

When The Wind Blows - Mansun

Wireless tells us all
radio tells us
Looks like there's a war
It looks like there will be a war
Both of us been through this before dear
We've all been through it dear
Put on our gas masks and pray dear
Put on your oxygen mask and pray dear
But at least we've got each other
At least we have each other
I'll still love you when the wind blows through
I still love you when the wind blows
I've been through this before
I have been through
I'll still love you when the wind
i still love you
When the wind blows through
when the wind blows
Outside all is cold
It's freezing cold outside
It looks like there's no war
It looks like there will be a war
But my hair's falling out at it's root dear
But my hair is falling out darling
Things will blow over any day dear
everything will be over soon darling
And at least we've got each other
At least we have each other
