id ego and superego

After watching "Night of the Dead", I found out that it is the originator of the suspense and thriller movies I have watched over the years. A main story is strung with five short stories, and the five short stories can be made into a good-looking suspense thriller movie if they are taken out individually.

In the first story, the racer was suspicious of a strange event in the dark night and escaped by not getting on the bus. But will death just let him go?

In the second story, the little girl met the little brother who was killed by her sister. The little girl was kind-hearted, which made the little brother feel warm, and the little brother was willing to sleep peacefully. Then if it is replaced by a person who has a lot of evil deeds, can this person still walk out of the room safely?

The mirror in the third story is an old friend of suspense-thriller movies, and it can reflect reality or distort it. A mirror is not a mirror, and a person is not a person. Mirrors can be easily broken, but people's hearts cannot be easily broken.

The story of the two golfers in the fourth story is the only one that is witty and slightly ironic. With the exception of the suicide of one golfer, the whole story is lighthearted and cheerful.

What happened between the puppet and the puppet master in the fifth story is chilling. Fantasy projects onto reality, and reality responds to fantasy. The puppet master with bad business was depressed, and a puppet personality who was full of confidence and liked sarcasm was born. The puppet master gradually loses himself, and the puppet is no longer at the mercy of others. The home and away conversion of the two personalities is simply perfect puppet art.

In the main story, Craig felt familiar with the scene in front of him. But he couldn't remember the whole thing, and he could only figure out the details when it was about to happen. Almost all of the prophecies he said came true, except for the last one. He remembered something and chose to strangle the doctor. He wanted to hide, so he hid it in all five stories, and was strangled to death by the puppet. Craig woke up in bed, sweating profusely, then flipped a coin to choose whether to be invited or not, and finally drove to his destination. The destination is a familiar house with familiar people in the house. Craig felt familiar with the scene before him. Can Craig wake up again?

In today's opinion, there are many movies that are very similar to these short stories, "Death is Coming", "A Chinese Ghost Story", "Shutter Island", "Deadly ID", "Inception", "Terrorist Cruise", etc. , the list of movies could go longer. But in 1945, such a film format was undoubtedly a groundbreaking move. Dreams and reality, real and unreal, id and superego, it was a brainstorm for anyone who could see the film in 1945, let alone the few directors who could make it. In 1945 in history, the Second World War had just ended, and the world was in shambles, but it was gratifying that human civilization could still produce such fruits.

Dead of Night quotes

  • [Sally's mother has shown up to drag her away to a party for her godfather Edwin]

Sally O'Hara: But, Mother, I can't! You see, this is Mr. Craig, and I'm one of the characters in his dream!

Mrs O'Hara: [shakes his hand briskly] Oh, how do you do? Such fun, charades! So, you do understand, don't you, and poor Edwin's so terribly sensitive. Now, come along!

Sally O'Hara: Mummy, you mustn't! You see, Mr. Craig's going to hit me - savagely!

Mrs O'Hara: Oh, well, I'm sure he can hit somebody else instead. Now, come along, dear!

  • Dr. van Straaten: [removes his eyeglasses] Ah. No doubt you thought it would be very amusing to watch my cherished disbeliefs being shattered.

Eliot Foley: [sarcastically] Mm, very clever of us, I must say. I wonder if we have any more surprises up our sleeves.

[the camera focuses on Dr. van Straaten's hands as he fiddles with his eyeglasses]

Walter Craig: That's it - your glasses!

Dr. van Straaten: What about my glasses?

Walter Craig: It's later on. We're having drinks. You break those glasses of yours, and then, quite suddenly, the room goes dark. And then, Foley, you say something, something about the death of a man I've never heard of. And that's where my dream becomes a nightmare. A nightmare of horror.

Joan Cortland: Horror? What sort of horror?

Walter Craig: I feel my will power draining away. I feel I'm in the grip of a force that's driving me towards something unspeakably evil.

Dr. van Straaten: It shows that you have some heavy weight on your conscience. Now, in my opinion...

Walter Craig: I'm no longer interested in your opinion, Doctor. You shook me at first, with your ingenious theories. I thought perhaps the whole thing was a delusion. But Mrs. Grainger's arrival has altered all that. I have been here before, in my dreams. For some reason, I was given foreknowledge of the future. Why? I don't know. I want to know! I must know!
