id ego and superego

After watching "Night of the Dead", I found out that it is the originator of the suspense and thriller movies I have watched over the years. A main story is strung with five short stories, and the five short stories can be made into a good-looking suspense thriller movie if they are taken out individually.

In the first story, the racer was suspicious of a strange event in the dark night and escaped by not getting on the bus. But will death just let him go?

In the second story, the little girl met the little brother who was killed by her sister. The little girl was kind-hearted, which made the little brother feel warm, and the little brother was willing to sleep peacefully. Then if it is replaced by a person who has a lot of evil deeds, can this person still walk out of the room safely?

The mirror in the third story is an old friend of suspense-thriller movies, and it can reflect reality or distort it. A mirror is not a mirror, and a person is not a person. Mirrors can be easily broken, but people's hearts cannot be easily broken.

The story of the two golfers in the fourth story is the only one that is witty and slightly ironic. With the exception of the suicide of one golfer, the whole story is lighthearted and cheerful.

What happened between the puppet and the puppet master in the fifth story is chilling. Fantasy projects onto reality, and reality responds to fantasy. The puppet master with bad business was depressed, and a puppet personality who was full of confidence and liked sarcasm was born. The puppet master gradually loses himself, and the puppet is no longer at the mercy of others. The home and away conversion of the two personalities is simply perfect puppet art.

In the main story, Craig felt familiar with the scene in front of him. But he couldn't remember the whole thing, and he could only figure out the details when it was about to happen. Almost all of the prophecies he said came true, except for the last one. He remembered something and chose to strangle the doctor. He wanted to hide, so he hid it in all five stories, and was strangled to death by the puppet. Craig woke up in bed, sweating profusely, then flipped a coin to choose whether to be invited or not, and finally drove to his destination. The destination is a familiar house with familiar people in the house. Craig felt familiar with the scene before him. Can Craig wake up again?

In today's opinion, there are many movies that are very similar to these short stories, "Death is Coming", "A Chinese Ghost Story", "Shutter Island", "Deadly ID", "Inception", "Terrorist Cruise", etc. , the list of movies could go longer. But in 1945, such a film format was undoubtedly a groundbreaking move. Dreams and reality, real and unreal, id and superego, it was a brainstorm for anyone who could see the film in 1945, let alone the few directors who could make it. In 1945 in history, the Second World War had just ended, and the world was in shambles, but it was gratifying that human civilization could still produce such fruits.

Dead of Night quotes

  • [first lines]

[Walter Craig drives up to Foley's farmhouse and looks around with an expression part suspicious and part dumbfounded]

    Eliot Foley: Ah! Walter Craig?

Walter Craig: How do you do. You're Eliot Foley.

    [They shake hands]

Eliot Foley: That's right. So glad you were able to come. Let's have your bag. I'll put the car away afterwards. You know, it struck me, after I'd telephoned you, rather cheek on my part to ask a busy architect like yourself to come down and spend the weekend with a set of complete strangers.

Walter Craig: [to himself] Not complete.

Eliot Foley: You see, we're pretty cramped for space here. We need at least two more bedrooms.

Walter Craig: And with only one living room.

Eliot Foley: Yes, only one living room. However, we'll go into all that in the morning, shall we?

    [They enter the house]

Eliot Foley: Know this part of the world at all?

Walter Craig: No. I've never been here before. No. Not actually.

Eliot Foley: Well, let me take your things.

[He notices that Craig is already hanging up his hat and coat on a coat-rack in an alcove]

Eliot Foley: Ha ha, fancy your spotting that. Trained professional eye, eh?

    Walter Craig: Yes, of course.

Eliot Foley: Well, we have seven other guests, so I've put you in the barn. But don't get worried...

Walter Craig: - It has central heating and every modern convenience.

Eliot Foley: The very words I was going to use!

Eliot Foley: Well, this way; I expect they've started tea.

Walter Craig: Yes. Yes, they have.

  • [Peter is opening his fiancée's birthday present to him]

Peter Cortland: You haven't gone and had your portrait painted, have you?

Joan Cortland: [smiling fondly] No, I thought you'd like to look at yourself.

[He opens the package to find it is a mirror]

Peter Cortland: Darling, it's a beauty!
