The French short film "The Tuner" in 2010 put forward this proposition, and it became popular on the Internet for a while through novel suspense settings and strong narrative tension. The Indian film industry expanded and developed this wonderful idea to complete the global screen film "The Tuner".
In comparison, the original work is like a delicate and grim short story, which comes to an abrupt end after being revealed through philosophical speculation and suspense. On the basis of suspense, Indian feature films have made the original suspense more complete and credible by enriching family backgrounds and characters.
The film transplants the background of the story to India, and the philosophical metaphors and realistic environment in the original work are also successfully integrated into the local scenery and characteristics of India. On this basis, the director also successfully added backgrounds such as class, family, personality and way of thinking for all parties to the conflict. The core conflict of the original work became the fuse in the feature film, and the subsequent stories closely revolved around the previous story. The development of the identity clues, which is naturally connected with the seemingly useless background settings above, constitutes a more complete and detailed narrative logic and reasoning process.
In addition, the newly added emotional clues and identity conflicts are also unique social realities in India. In France, characters can reason and express their emotions in large sections. The space of more than ten minutes is also for this kind of philosophical thinking and Metaphors offer possibilities. But for a movie of more than two hours, if it focuses too much on theoretical lyricism, it is easy to make people feel preachy and be rejected. Even if the music and dance content unique to India is added, it cannot support the emotions of the audience for a long time.
Obviously, the director has long been aware of the difficulty of adaptation, so he made a big fuss about localization, and the wonderful suspense of the original appeared soon, but that was just the beginning. In order to increase the sense of suspense, the director also used a rich narrative form to ensure the tension of the story.
Transplanting the story structure that has already produced a good response into the local area is a common technique used in variety shows. The leap even goes back to Akira Kurosawa's adaptation of Shakespeare's works. This may seem like a shortcut, but if it lacks a sincere and attentive creative attitude, when compared with the wonderful original work, it will become a negative teaching material for Dongshi's imitation, which will lead to the disgust of the audience. For example, the recent adaptation of the Italian film "Perfect Stranger" to China's "Crazy Caller", because of the lack of natural integration with local culture, the narrative ability has been greatly reduced, resulting in a large number of bad reviews, accused of being hot spots and ruining classics story.
Of course, it would be great if the sublimation of the theme could be realized on the basis of the adaptation, and there would be a more profound and comprehensive reveal at the philosophical level. The Indian adaptation of The Tuner is clearly not up to that standard. On the basis of the qualified storytelling, the film repeats the theme of the short film with the metaphor of rabbits and hunters, and the end of the film provides a foreshadowing with a short shot, suggesting more directions of the plot. But in fact, the issues of human nature, society, discrimination and prejudice extended from the core story are basically not touched by the feature film. This is also the regret of this adaptation.
