Fourteen lessons taught by Socrates

first lesson

Dan Millman, a young gymnast, woke up from a dream in the middle of the night and was afraid of the future. He came to the gas station, saw an old man, bought something, and when he left, he saw the old man and reached the roof in an instant. Surprised, I wondered how he did it. Left with this question.

Second lesson

Wanting to know the answer, he asked how the old man got to the roof in an instant. He said, as a gymnast, I am so good in such a difficult sport, I train seven days a week, fifty weeks a year, and I am afraid that I will not be able to enter the Olympic selection. I know no one can do what you do.

The old man said, you think you know it, but you don't. Knowledge is not wisdom, Wisdom is doing. Young people say arrogantly, you can test me, you can ask me any question. The old man asked, are you happy? Dan replied: My father is rich, and I got all A's in my homework. As long as I want, a woman will come to my door. What's wrong with me? The old man asked: Then why don't you sleep well? And asked him, if you can't make the Olympic national team, what will you do? Not being able to enter the selection is something Dan is unwilling to face, and he leaves angrily.

Lesson Three

Another night he went to the gas station again, a girl prepared food for him, and he devoured it. The old man said that only by eating slowly can he appreciate the essence of food, and questioned his diet and living habits, saying that that would not allow him to achieve the best training effect. Have him stand on the table and challenge the squat for five minutes. The young man thought it was easy, but it didn't take long for him to fall off the table.

The old man said that everyone wants you to do as they say, not to think for yourself. Don't gather information from the outside, but from the inside. People are afraid of their hearts and don't want to face them. You can't sleep at night because when everything is quiet, you find that everything is so empty.

He told the young man that if he wanted to be a true warrior, to use his mind and body beyond the ordinary, the old man could train him.

lesson Four

The teammate of the gymnastics team's pommel horse strength was injured, and the young man came to the old man again. The old man said that the brain is just a reflex organ. You fill your mind with too many ideas every day. If you want to learn, you have to throw out the trash. Throw away what you don't need in your head. On this day, the old man precisely received the tools thrown by the young man at will. Tell him it's just the result of applying leverage correctly. Dan felt great and began to listen to him.

fifth lesson

They met at the bridge, and the young man remembered that there was a temporary training session and asked if he could start sooner if he was in a hurry. The old man said yes, and then threw him off the bridge into the river. The exasperated young man got up from the water and asked why. The old man: Did you think about school, shopping, training in a hurry, or something else? no. The present is the present. Tossing him into the water was to clear his mind and allow him to immerse himself in the experience.

The old man said that your mind is filled and you miss everything that is going on right now. The young man said: Nothing is happening now. Nothing at all? He made time slow down. Slow enough to allow people to see what's going on. On the grass, a couple of people laughing, a woman playing a game of frisbee with a dog, a man in a ring is flipping a book, a ladybug is crawling... A lot of things are happening. Just turn a blind eye. distractions make it impossible to concentrate. here, now, this moment. The old man taught him. He did as he did, and the pommel action stunned everyone, and everyone called him a pommel genius.

Lesson Six

He excitedly ran to announce the good news to the old man, but the old man asked, how long have you kept your mind free? How long? You are so obsessed with the past, so complacent, that you completely forget to live in the present.

Lesson Seven

He listens to the old man, sweeps the floor, wipes the car and cleans the toilet, but he doesn't know why, and at the same time his rings are not performing well, so he starts to question: what warrior needs to be toilet trained? The old man replied: You need to learn to meditate in motion. Let go of unnecessary constraints, such as pride, such as speaking. Dan couldn't listen, thinking that the poor man couldn't teach him to be an Olympic champion, so he left the old man and returned to his old life track.

Lesson Eight

In one accident, Dan's motorcycle collided with a car, shattering his leg, and doctors declared him unable to race. In the dream, the other self told him to die, and the other self did not want to die. In this case, he found the old man again. He didn't know what to do. The old man said that the first important thing to be a warrior is to admit that you don't know. Everything has a reason. Even his car accident. It is up to him to find its meaning or not.

Lesson 9

The training enters a new phase: The old man puts Dan in an old car and thinks until he comes up with something worthwhile. He said a lot, but got no response from the old man. Until he said: There's never nothing going on. There're no ordinary moments. It means that everything that happens is meaningful, slow down time, and focus on what is happening in this moment.

Lesson 10

Every action has its pleasures and its costs, recognize this duality, become reality, make your own choices, and take responsibility for them.

When they were robbed, they did not resist, and took the initiative to hand over their wallets, watches, and clothes. Young people do not understand. The old man said that the people who are the most difficult to fall in love with need love the most, which means that giving them whatever you can give them will be a change for the robbers. Dan said the looters would kill them. The old man said that although death is not as vigorous as youth, there is no need to be depressed. Death is not sad, sadly is never lived. When you feel fear, take out your sword and slash the mind to shreds, the fear and the remorse, and the things that exist in the past and the future.

Lesson 11

When Dan was ready to accept that he would stop practicing gymnastics, the old man told him to keep training. A warrior will not give up what he loves and let him find love in the process of doing things. You can continue to practice even if you have a metal rod in your body. Warriors are not perfect, warriors are not victorious, warriors are not invulnerable. He is vulnerable. But that's true bravery.

What if it can't be done? That's in the future, leave it alone. So where do I start? There is no beginning, no end, only doing.

So he started training with the injury.

Lesson 12

Despite his impressive training, the coach did not approve him for the selection. The old man said that when a person does not get what he wants, he will be sad. When people get what they want, they still feel sad. Because you can't have it forever. The coach has the final say on whether to approve or not. What Dan can't break through is that he always wants to control and control the result, and conversely, he is controlled by the result. Gold is not the goal, doing what you love is. This time he didn't leave, went back to the old car and sat down.

Lesson 13

Seeing that he didn't give up, the old man was very relieved: "Tomorrow, I will take you to a place with hiking shoes. It's a long way, but I've always wanted to take you there since the first time you came." They walked all the way for three hours. Always excited, like a child waiting for presents on Christmas Eve.

On the way they say that there are only three laws in life: contradiction, humor and change. Paradox, life is a mystery, don't waste time trying to solve it. Humor, maintain a sense of humor, especially self-humour, that is the most important force. Change, nothing is static.

Arrived at the destination, it turned out to be only a stone. He was disappointed, but quickly realized that "the journey brings us joy, not the destination." Because when we set off, we don't know what we'll end up with.

last lesson

Later, in front of the coach, he didn't say anything and just put on the ring. On the field, I told my teammates that what the old man taught him was not magic, but to get rid of distractions in his mind. For a moment, take action. He graduated.

Lesson summary: here .now .this moment.

This movie was recommended by Teacher Xinpin a long time ago, but I have never seen it. It turned out to have another name "Peace Warrior". I don't want to miss every line in it, and I read it twice in a row.
