Optimist utopia

"Tomorrowland" is a movie with a very unique concept, but the narrative and characterization are not successful. The gorgeous foreshadowing of the first 100 minutes and the hasty preaching for the next 30 minutes ended; a lot of time was spent highlighting the beautiful setting of tomorrow's world, and the explanation of the plot direction was ignored, and the final sensation began before the climax was reached. What the film wants to inspire is the "dreamer", but the character that impresses me the most is not the heroine or uncle, but the loli robot, and the secondary line is suspected of claiming to win the master.

But I would still recommend this movie, it is different from the science fiction movies I have seen in recent years. Many people regard "Tomorrowland" as a children's film, and it does meet the characteristics of many children's films, but in my opinion, its young age is mainly due to the retro concept. When people first taste the sweetness brought by the development of science and technology, they hope to rely on the power of scientific invention to get a better life. The fantasy of early science fiction should be bolder, more divorced from reality, and more optimistic. Tomorrowland is based on this optimism about technology, which can be seen from its four creators: Eiffel, the man who created the miracle of architectural history; Jules Verne, the father of science fiction; and Edison and Tesla It’s hard to imagine that two mortal enemies are willing to shake hands and make peace. This also expresses the wish of "inventors to unite together for a common dream." This kind of optimism can easily be confused with younger age. In childhood, people are always full of hope for the future, but as they grow up, pessimism breeds; with the development of technology, the benefits it may bring to us are also conscious The ground faded. This is the same trend in modern science fiction, and it is also the view held by the villain Uncle House: technology is good, but there is no use for eggs, people should die or die, technology has only become death and anti-death Tool of.

In the world of tomorrow, the city is surrounded by a golden wheat field, with blue sky and white clouds, futuristic high-rise buildings, and green vegetation. Its aesthetic is a popular aesthetic, and it is an open city, like Dora A future world in a dream. In the imagination of many science fiction movies, in order to achieve efficiency, the tall buildings are crowded; industrial waste gas, devegetation, and the poor streets caused by the polarization of the rich and the poor. The protagonist lives in a cramped house or a spacecraft. Here, the whole is a depressive, closed atmosphere. Behind the technology within reach is not a dream but consumerism. The most cutting-edge technology is in the hands of interest groups, and finally escaped by personal heroism. This is naturally a projection of reality. At the World Expo, Uncle House told the young Frank that the things invented should be "make the world a better place." This sentence also appeared repeatedly in "Silicon Valley", but in the intrigue of competitors, the reality of bankruptcy crisis Against the background, the abuse of this sentence seems so pale and ridiculous. Pessimism is universal, it appears as an adult, "Tomorrowland" stands alone in it, and people think it is as innocent as a child.

The contradiction in "Tomorrowland" is the collision of optimistic and pessimistic views, and the choice of which wolf to feed. As a person with a complex of scientists, I have also imagined a city composed only of scholars, excluding politicians and chaebols, although this assumption is extremely untenable. The values that this movie wants to convey are long-lost and precious. However, the terrible ending turned it into a third-rate article with only conclusions and no arguments, which made some people feel fooled. If it can look at this issue more pragmatically, it will definitely be a very good movie.

Of course, the future world is an overly ideal situation, and the reality is much more complicated. And I still believe that the future will look like tomorrow's world: equal opportunities regardless of race or gender, respect for culture and diversity, technology soars in the hotbed, and individuals develop freely. Obey the true hopes and desires, and don't waste your life in cynicism.

Casey Newton: [voice over] First order of business... get the door back open. Couldn't hurt to get a few experienced engineers over here. Next...

Frank Walker: [voice over] Put the party back on... and print out some new invitations.

[Now cut to Frank and Casey speaking in front of an audience of androids like Athena]

Frank Walker: Which brings us to why we're here today. A year ago, it was all supposed to be over... we shouldn't even be here, but we are. It isn't hard to knock down a big, evil building that's telling everybody that the world's going to end. What is hard... is figuring out what to build in its place, and if we're going to do that... we can't do it alone. We're going to need all of you...

Young British Recruiter: [raises his hand] Frank Walker. May I ask a question?

    Frank Walker: Sure!

Young British Recruiter: The search parameters you've given us, while mathematically sound, are a bit... undefined. Could you be more specific, please?

Frank Walker: Well, Miss Newton. You want to tell our recruiters what they're looking for?

Casey Newton: Dreamers... we are looking for dreamers. Anyone who will feed the right wolf.

[start handing out cases of Tomorrowland buttons]

Frank Walker: So... I once told your predecessor that she was nothing but a combination of ones and zeroes. I was wrong. She was much more than that. You are much more than that, too. So, go out there and do she would've done. Find the ones who haven't given up. They're the future.

  • Athena: There are things I need to tell you before the final... before the automated program kicks in. I'm a machine, I never thought that was bad until I saw your face when you found out I was.

    Frank Walker: I always knew...

    Athena: No you didn't...

Computer Voice: Systems failing. Activating last thoughts saved for Frank Walker.

    [Voice-Over]

Athena: Log 15. September. 1965. Frank Walker is looking at me in a manner that is difficult to recognize. It seems imperative to explain to him that I'm an audio-animatronic...

    Frank Walker: Athena...

Athena: ...But I'm concerned that he may be adversely affected when he finds out that I'm not human. He has potential. I don't want to damage it. He needs someone to believe in him and I am fulfilling that need. He's my top recruit. Log 24. October. 1965. I'm having unusual thoughts towards Frank Walker. I suspect a flaw in my empathy interface. I'm thinking I should report it... but I haven't. I cannot explain why. Log 78. April. 1984. Frank Walker has been banished by Governor Nix. He says he's lost hope and he holds me responsible for having given it to him in the first place. I do not understand this. He says I never will, because I do not feel anger... or disappointment... or love.

    Computer Voice: End recording.

Athena: I was designed to find dreamers... I found you... and lost you. But I found her... Casey. Dreamers need to stick together. It's not programming, it's personal.
