Before I started translating this Q&A, I had been thinking about how much this would mean for everyone to understand the story behind the movie, but based on the different perspectives of audiences in each region, I finally decided to translate it. Below is a brief excerpt from this Q&A. If there is any mistake, please correct me.
H: Host A: Alice Rohrwacher Alice Rohrwacher
H : How was the concept of abandoned city (abandoned city/forgotten city) mentioned before the film screening reflected in the final film?
A : In my country, the land in the countryside belongs to the peasants. So when they decided to leave this land, there was a mix of responsibility and guilt for the land. But when I talk to people, I realize that they're not just looking for an easier and better life, it's more about how the situation came about. People choose to leave because the rulers above them do not allow them to have a truer and deeper relationship with the land under their feet (not allowed to develop a true and deep relationship with the land). People like Marquise, Nicola, build an invisible cage around the peasants, no flogging, no formalized model of domination, but use invisible shackles to prevent people from really feeling and understanding the land beneath their feet. (To prevent people from developing their own experience of the land)
H : Can you briefly describe the casting process of Casting? I know that Lazzaro is actually a student studying Economy.
A : In fact, he is a high school student studying business. When we started looking for the role of Lazzaro, we all realized that the actor we wanted was not going to sign up for a regular audition himself, even if he saw a poster for a movie audition or something. So we decided to go to the school to find it, by talking with the students.
When we first saw him (Adriano), we knew he was the man we were looking for. When we approached and asked him to be the star of the film, he refused. But after a period of persuasion and rehearsal, we explained that the purpose of appearing in a movie is not to show off or show off your talents, but to express something through performance (showing something to oneself, not about showing off). In the end he decided to try, but only for this movie.
Audience Q &A :
Au: Audience
A: Alice Rohrwacher Alice Rohrwacher
Au : Please tell us about the filming of the film, the scenes of the countryside and the city.
A : The scene in the movie is concrete, but at the same time it is very abstract (Concrete & Abstract). So we were looking for places that were both real and actually epic. I want to detach myself from reality. Usually, we will choose the north-south span to create the difference in the scene. But we decided to do this by separating the interior and exterior. So for the rural interior, we chose an area near Lazio, a place 17km from my home. In fact, there is a famous Italian attraction nearby called Civita di Bagnoregio tourist attraction . ( as shown below)
And behind him, is an inaccessible, very desolate place. That's where we shoot the country scenes. (As shown below)
On the other hand, for urban framing we selected 4 northern and central Italian cities to complete our shoots.
They are Milan (Milan), Turin (Turin), Civitavecchia (Civitavecchia), Tarquinia (Tarquinia).
The purpose of choosing a few cities in this way is to detach ourselves from the familiar reality. (to create this combination in order to detach myself from reality)
Au : For you, what do you think a good person should be like at the moment? (Host added that this is a good question for America today. Because the day the film aired, Judge Kavanaugh was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and officially became a Supreme Court justice)
A : I think it is important for me to see Lazzaro as a symbol of purity. And over time it remains intact and flawless (the idea is that it goes thru time and it goes thru intact). It may be destroyed, but every once in a while he will reappear. And it doesn't evolve into something else over time.
What's important to me is that being a good person is not good deeds per se. Lazzaro is not simply doing good or bad things, but what he really does is that he identifies with a possibility that he recognizes in the people he faced with.
I don't want everyone to be like Lazzaro, I want us to think that people like Lazzaro exist. It doesn't matter to be someone like Lazzaro, it matters that we keep such an image in our hearts. It's not so important for me to be identical with it. But to keep it in mind.
PS
The translation is not very accurate in some places, I hope you can help correct me. Thanks!
