Astonishing is Bergman's chasing attitude, who has been married throughout his life, trying to make up for himself from his partner's (knowingly) crippled love. Being loved is not something to be proud of, nor is it a unique ability to be loved. "Love" itself is a questionable existence. This is not a pessimistic tone, but a realist tone.
Marriage can only be taken seriously without the expectation that someone, something, or something will completely free oneself from the very essence of life—like the pattern on a blanket, or the dust on a sofa.
