The protagonist was kidnapped as a child. I've been in that house watching the Brisby Bears for so many years. It was Brisbee Bear who taught him to read and taught him mathematics. Brisbee Bear has become one with him, an integral part of his life.
After being rescued, neither he nor his family of origin would adapt. The family didn't understand why he was so obsessed with Brisbee Bears at the beginning, but after a series of things, he met friends, and even made his own Brisbee Bear movie and got good results.
