Britt Marling can be said to be a professional "magic stick", because most of her works have certain sci-fi or supernatural parts, but different from ordinary sci-fi or magic works, Britt does not focus on the technical level For example, "Another Earth" focuses on the theme of redemption, and "Listen to My Voice" focuses on the theme of belief. It must be pointed out that the two films were neither wonderful nor profound. Of course, this is mainly due to the lack of the level of writing skills and the lack of expressiveness. This can be seen from the later "Foresight". Her expressiveness has obviously improved a lot, which also shows that she is also making continuous progress. Still, Britt's own style is evident in all three works, her distinctive Maringe ending (a term I coined myself).
Simply put, what is the ending of Britt's work? It should be more like a semi-open ending. For example, in "Another Earth", the protagonist Ronda finally gave the university professor the ticket to another earth. Just as she was feeling the redemption of the sun, she suddenly saw a person coming from another earth beside her. See herself on her own. Well, from this point of view, let’s analyze that there are two possibilities for her from another earth to come to earth. The first is that Ronda from another earth did not have a car accident and was successfully admitted to MIT, and finally represented another earth. The elite came to this earth, in this case, the professor's wife and children will be alive, and the professor will meet another self and his wife and children on another earth; the second possibility is that Ronda is still in a car accident, or as a criminal. He got the ticket, but Ronda of another earth did not give up the opportunity to the professor, but chose to arrive on earth and meet himself. So why is it called a semi-open ending, because the normal logical deduction from the information that the movie can give is only these two kinds of results, not the open-ended ending like "Birdman", you can understand it however you want. Also in "Listen to My Voice", judging from the existing information given, the little girl and the heroine also suffer from blood diseases and autism, and they will secretly shake hands. The little girl does not have a mother in her life, and the police have it. With the real information of the heroine, the little girl can logically be the heroine's child, but there is no evidence that the little girl is not the heroine's mother, so you can say from the perspective that the heroine is a schizophrenic liar It makes sense for you to say that she really came from the future. I think this is Britt Marling's unique construction method. In summary, it can be described as "single cause, multiple effects". In fact, we have seen "multiple causes and single effects" and "causal cycles" in general scripts. Such as "Terrorist Cruise" and "Twelve Monkeys" and some other "fatalistic" movies, the emphasis and expression is that we can't change our destiny no matter what, so we have to accept it. But Brit Marling's work is conceptually closer to quantum mechanics, an expression of limited possibilities. Things can be like this or that. In fact, they are more like the multi-line endings in many games, but they are multi-line The ending is different depending on the choice, but Ma Ling's works stay at the moment when the choice is made, which is her very delicate point, because if the ending is shot in two lines, it will make people feel very abrupt and inconvenient. Adapting, and staying in the moment of choice is full of beauty and mystery.
This is an expression worth learning, including that if we make it harder, we can make the choices into 3 or more, but if there are too many, in addition to the script itself is not easy to control, the audience's perception is not good, and it will be very tiring. So maybe we can try a "one-two" or "one-on-three" Brit Marling-esque ending in the future.
