This movie is recognized as Melville's masterpiece, and it's the third Melville movie I've seen. After reading it, I think this film can definitely be regarded as a model of light weight. Melville calmly painted the credible images of a group of resistance fighters in an almost line drawing style, with a cold and chilling style. And what makes Melville different from other directors is that he believes that people are the hostages of history. Everyone in the film is not born to be warlike, nor does he necessarily have the consciousness of throwing their heads and blood for the motherland. Everyone has no choice when it comes to their feet. In the end, they died one by one, which is quite fateful. This sense of destiny is also deeply reflected in "Lone Killer" and "Red Circle". Like the famous line in "Red Circle" "Everyone is guilty, even if not at first, there will be soon." PS. I'm watching the 145-minute CC restoration, the standard commentary track It's really, really, really good, I highly recommend it!
