"Blue Angel" movie script

adaptation, director / Joseph von Sternberg
translation / Gu Shiyuan, Shi Mengjun

"Blue Angel" is Germany's first sound film, produced in 1930, by the famous Hollywood German director Joseph ·Von Sternberg is based on the novel of the famous German writer Heinrich Mann. It describes a sanctimonious old professor who fell in love with Lola, a singer and dancer who performed in the "Blue Angels" bar. In order to marry her, he gave up his career and became a supporting role clown performing magic juggling with the group. In the case of a devastating blow to his career, he died in disgrace. The characters in the film have a strong sense of life, and it is difficult to praise or criticize in a single word. For example, Professor Larter has both a kind and honest side, and a hypocritical and lovely side; Lola's feelings are sincere and shallow at the same time, and the wild and uninhibited contains the meaning of drunkenness and cynicism. The film reflects the social outlook of Germany in the 1920s from one side through the true description of various people, with a relaxed and lively atmosphere and full of humor.
The male protagonist, Professor Rath, was played by the most famous German actor at that time, Emil Jannings. He described Rattle's psychological activities delicately and vividly, and vividly showed the changes of the professor's social status and spiritual outlook. Marlene Dietrich, who played Lola, was an unknown film and stage actress before she acted in the film. Director Sternberg discovered her and made her an overnight sensation. big star. In this film, she uses a low tone, a seductive sleeping spirit, and a provocative dance to bring out the demeanor of a low-level dancer. After the film was released, it sold well in Europe and the United States, and the singing of "Lola Lola" was also circulated in various countries.
Marlene Dietrich has a beautiful appearance, a good temperament, a slender figure, and is good at singing and dancing. After the filming of this film, she entered Hollywood and has performed in fifty-four films so far. Many roles such as girls, ladies and queens are full of legends on the screen. Although she has not won an Oscar, she is comparable to Garbo, and she is currently living in Paris in her old age.

The camera pans all the way to Larter's bedroom door. About a second later, the door opened and Larter came out. Larter (V.O.): You just write...
▲(Medium shot) Larter is leaning on the podium.
Larter: Julius Caesar. What would have happened if—well—Marc Anton (who adjusted his glasses) did not make his grave speech?
He made a very unnatural movement with his left hand, shook his head smugly and smugly, stood up and walked towards the window with his hands behind his back. Students are writing essays.
▲ (bust view) Larter, Lohmann and Goldstup are in the foreground. Sunlight streamed into the classroom through the windows. Larter went over to open the window. The female chorus of "Einsin of Tarao" sounded. (The singing continues and the soundtrack for several shots)

Unster (with a sobbing tone): Mr. Professor...
Larter (interrupting Unster): Don't talk! (looks at Unster for a long time) Aren't you ashamed?
Unster: But Mr. Professor, if I say...
Larter (interrupting Unster): Stop it! look at me!
Unster looked up.
RUTT (sternly) Where did you get these postcards from?
ONST (with a weeping voice): I don't know -
Larter: Don't lie! Where did it come from?
ONST (intermittently) Someone must have clipped the picture into my book.
Larter (skeptically): Is that so? (He leans over to Unster and raises his left eyebrow) Can I take your word for it?
ONST (finally crying) They're not nice to me because I didn't hang out with them at night.
LATT (grabbing Unster's cuff) What are you not messing with?
Unster: The rest of the classmates--
Larter: Say it!
ONST (groaning) The rest of the class was in the Blue Angels bar every night—sitting with women.
Larter (loses self-control): Where?
Unster: In "Blue Angels".
Larter (looking blankly at Unster, letting go of his cuff): "Blue Angel"? !
Larter leaned back in his chair, staring intently at Unster.

(half-length view) Unster goes to the door and bows respectfully to Rath before leaving.
(close up) Larter. Seeing that Unster was gone, he brought the photograph close to his eyes and looked at it carefully. He took out two more pictures from his trouser pocket, and together with the first one, he fanned the pictures like playing cards, and glanced at the door. Enjoy the pictures again. He made a graceful head motion, blowing at the middle photo. He glanced left and right at the doors and windows, and then he blew attentively and even more vigorously. He blew at the photo again and again.
▲ (Close-up) Larter holds three postcard-sized photos with the words "Lola Lola" written on them. Lola in the middle photo is not wearing a skirt, just tight around a fringe. As soon as Larter blew, the fringes fluttered, exposing Lola's thighs. Larter blew again, and the fringe moved again. At this point the music starts. (Fade out)

▲(Fade in, medium close-up) Lola stood on the stage in the "Blue Angels" bar, twisting her waist to the sound of music. The set behind her was decorated with a radiant sun, and cardboard clouds jumped beside the sun to the beat of the music; there were also beer-drinking women in Rauben, who were part of the roving troupe. Lola had a shiny hairnet over her head and was wearing a gleaming black leotard. She puts her hands on her hips and looks over the camera at the audience.

Waiter (VO): Pickled pork leg with sauerkraut!
Lola: . . . Beautiful little Lola,
men all fall at my feet; but no one is allowed to touch
my fine piano . She turned her head and walked to her seat on the stage, loosening her bow tie and taking her seat. Someone in the audience was clamoring for sausages.

▲ (Mid-close shot) Lola looked indifferent, sat next to a female companion, took a beer from her hand, took a sip, and handed it back. There were some more voices in the audience. A guest is shouting: Three more beers!
Waiter (voice-over, hoarsely): Sir, three more beers, great!
▲ (Panorama) Stage. When Lola stood up, she wiped her mouth twice with the corner of her bow tie, walked to the center of the stage, and continued to sing.
Lola: Whoever wants to send me home,
I beat him and won't spare him!
At the last beat of singing, she bowed quickly and stepped back.
▲ (Mid shot) A dark alley. Larter, wearing a coat and hat, and carrying a cane, walked briskly down the street. (Camera pans along) With accordion accompaniment, someone is singing "There's a Faithful Hussar". Larter went straight to a corner of a wall lit by a street lamp, and looked around hesitantly, not knowing where to go. A prostitute is leaning against the door smoking a cigarette. Larter crossed the side street. (Camera pans along) Larter turns around, puts on his coat, and walks away down a bright side street. A woman's laughter can be heard outside the painting.
▲ (Panorama) "Blue Angel" stage. Changing scenery. A stage worker walked to the center of the stage and looked up. The picture is divided into two parts by a column in the hall. The band is playing "Ah, Dear Augustine." Some audience members complained that the scene was changed too slowly and shouted unhappily. Gust, an older actor sitting on the stage, walked to the front of the stage, made a Lola pose, and sang:
Gust: I'm going to pick a man for myself tonight,
a man, a man My favorite guest.
A customer (voice-over):
Hello, dear, why haven't the vegetarian dishes been brought? !
Gust: Tonight I'm going to...

GUST (V.O.):
...take him home,
a man, a man I like.
Lola handed the puff to Goldstup, took the cigarette from Lohmann's mouth, took a puff and gave it back to him.
Gust (singing):
A man with a burning love in his heart,
a man with love spitting out of his eyes,
Lola straightens her wig and tucks her hair under it. Eltzum and Goldstup looked at her with a fascinated smile.
▲ (panorama) Gust swings to the rhythm. On the right, the stage workers put a spotlight:
Gust (sings):
A man who will kiss me,

The troupe actresses sit and drink. (MUSIC) Lola Lola is wearing a white wig and a Rococo dress, with her thighs appearing and disappearing under the dress. She smiled and bowed generously. With her hands behind her back, she swayed a few times to the beat of the music. Applause and cheers erupted in the hall.
Lola (singing):
Spring is coming in the green valley, and the
sparrows are chirping.
When she sings these two lines, she first assists with rhythmic gestures, and then puts her left hand to her ear, as if listening. The clarinet responded with the sound of a sparrow, and the audience laughed.
▲ (bust view) Erchuto, Lohmann and Goldstup. They were smiling, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer, and stood there staring madly at the stage.
Lola (off-screen, singing):
I fell in love with a man, I
just don't know who it was.
Love enriches my life,
whether he is rich or poor.
At this point Goldstup stepped forward and walked out of the picture.

A woman in the troupe walks up to the spotlight and turns the light on to the audience.
Waiter (voiceover): Another glass of Grogg!
Amid the screams of the audience, Lola turned around. The Rococo dress had no back, showing Lola's stockings and a pair of frilly briefs. She tilted her head back slightly, showing a charming smile, and continued to sing with open arms.
Lola (singing):
A man who burns love in his heart,
a man who squirts love out of his eyes.
▲(Mid-close shot) Rat appeared at the door of the "Blue Angel" bar. Through the dirty door glass, he leaned over to peer into the audience inside. He slammed the door open and stepped into the bar.

Lola (outside, singing):
A man with love burning in his heart!
▲ (Mid shot) Larter is in the middle of the audience. The spotlight fell on his chest. He opened the way with a cane and shouted: Don't go! Don't go! (He steps forward) You stop!

a man, a man I like.
▲ (half-length view) Rat pushed open the door and rushed into a room inside. Because he ran so fast, even the corners of his coat were pulled up. There were several women in petticoats in the room, some standing and some sitting. Larter took a glance and left the room to close the door. He was looking around in Lola's dressing room when the door behind him opened and a clown in costume came out of the back room, staring straight at Larter. Larter avoids the Joker's gaze and leaves the screen. A woman in a petticoat closed the door. The Joker was still staring at Larter.

Lola shook her head in surprise, put her cap on the table, and took off her wig.
Lola: You probably came from the police station?
She leaned over the table and brushed her hair.
Larter (confidently): Miss, you got it wrong! I'm Dr. Immanuel Rat, a professor at the local high school.
Lola looked him up from head to toe with a mocking expression, then leaned over to the mirror and brushed her hair.
Lola (laughs): In that case, you can safely take off your hat first.

KIPPERT (interrupting her): Shut up! Stop rustling!
He turned and saw Lola first, then Latt.
