Regarding this movie, everyone's attention seems to be on Theron's play, and most of the comments on the plot are mediocre. Maybe this movie just matches my appetite, whether it is the color of the picture or the style of music, including the movie. The plot design, it is a pity that everyone only pays attention to the play.
In fact, like the hot "Invisible Guest", this is also a movie in which the protagonist narrates a flashback, and the plot is reversed in the end. However, unlike the invisible guests, Arctic City did not capture the truth below the surface, and directly gave a one-sided plot, so the true and false details of the story are different. And the action performance of this movie is so brilliant, so in comparison, people ignore the plot, which may be the reason why the public feel that the literary drama is dull.
There are two kinds of movies that I can't understand in my eyes. One is that the basic story content is not clear and the audience is confused. "What does it say?" The second is that the story is smooth and the plot passes, but after the end, it is unsatisfactory. "Wait, wait, did I miss something?"
The extremely cold city belongs to the second kind.
Then here are some questions and opinions about the details of the movie.
From the viewing order of the movie
1. Is it Saatchi who betrayed James (the translation I saw is Saatchi)? Which identity does Lorraine use to fall in love with James?
It was indeed Saatchi, that is, Lorraine betrayed James, MI6 didn't know the relationship between Lorraine and James, and Lorraine deliberately concealed it. As for which identity of Lorraine to use for the relationship with James, I tend to use Lorraine, because in the dream behind Lorraine James said, "We know who Saatchi is, we have to run away." It should be James who got the list. Later, I finally learned that Lorraine was Saatchi, but because he loved Lorraine, he wanted to take Lorraine to escape, but he didn't expect to be sold to KGB by Lorraine (Saatchi).
And Lorraine burned the photo with James, this was the first foreshadowing that appeared at the beginning.
2. Does MI6 suspect that Lorraine is Saatchi? What is the purpose of the interrogation?
MI6 sent Lorraine to Berlin for two purposes. One was to find the roster and the other was to find Saatchi, the double agent. We also know from the movie that MI6 actually does not trust David or Lorraine. It should be targeted to one of these two people is Saatchi. So send two people to perform this task. So the purpose of this interrogation was actually to judge whether Lorraine was Saatchi or not, because David was dead and there was no evidence of his death, so Lorraine needed to clear his suspicions during the interrogation.
3. Does KGB know Lorraine's double agent status?
Lorraine was picked up by KGB as soon as he arrived in West Berlin. This scene was the second foreshadowing. KGB picked up Lorraine, in fact, to send a signal "you can go to the central cafe when you need it." And when Lorraine saw David's car following behind him, and made a big shot at the KGB people, the KGB people's reaction was indeed very puzzled and aggrieved, and they were not as vicious as they were after wearing a gang. So KGB should know Lorraine's double agent status, thinking that Lorraine is loyal to the Soviet Union.
When David introduced the architectural streets of Berlin to Lorraine in the car, Lorraine said, "I am not a tourist. Take me to the hotel on the corner of the street." David asked Lorraine, "I remember you said you hadn't been to Berlin?" This conversation was also foreshadowing. Lorraine is not the first time to come to Berlin.
4. When Lorraine went to collect James's body, the forensic doctor asked her "Is this your colleague?" Lorraine said "different department". Map two people to serve different countries.
5. Who is the mysterious watch shop owner in the film? Did David discover Lorraine's CIA status?
The watch shop is the CIA's information delivery point. From the end we know that Lorraine is not actually a double agent, but actually only works for the CIA. And the "local guide in East Berlin" is the big-eyed assistant brother. This assistant brother is naturally also a member of the CIA, a spy arranged by the CIA in MI6. The watch shop should not be the kind of independent transfer point, because Lorraine's very deep and important third-tier CIA identity will not be known to outsiders.
Both Britain and Russia want this list of agents, and of course the United States also wants it. So Bakhtin came to the watch shop to sell the list and confirmed that the watch shop was owned by the CIA.
David learned about the watch shop from the monitor, and from this he began to suspect that Lorraine was not only a double agent, but also had something to do with the CIA.
6. Lorraine went to see Bremovic at the Central Café.
Lorraine meets Bremovic here, while David is also secretly observing in the coffee shop. At this time, David had already monitored the watch shop and suspected that Lorraine had a relationship with the CIA and KGB.
Lorraine told MI6 that he went to the Central Café to investigate how much the Russians knew. Of course, MI6 was also a lie to us. At this time, the film is still blurring our thinking, who is Saatchi?
7. Lorraine went to East Berlin to see his assistant brother.
Lorraine's real purpose in going to East Berlin was also to meet the people of the CIA, so when the KGB people found Lorraine, Lorraine desperately dumped them. KGB people think Lorraine is loyal to them, so when they fight Lorraine, KGB people say "He just wants to see you????" KGB's heart os "What's wrong, Comrade Saqi, the organization just wants to see you," You don't have to fight so hard, right?"
8. In the middle of the movie, Lorraine met someone from the CIA in Berlin. (At this time, it was not revealed that Lorraine was from the CIA. In the dialogue, someone from MI6 called the CIA and asked the CIA to help.) The phone "Saatchi is about to be exposed". And the previous plots are all described, David is idle, met James, grabbed the list, and did not cooperate with Lorraine's work, step by step to pave the way for David to be Saatchi.
9. Who killed the spy mirror (informant)? When did KGB know Lorraine's third CIA status?
What we know from Lorraine’s description is that David wanted to monopolize the list, so he joined forces with KGB and wanted to use KGB to kill Spyscope and Lorraine.
David did reveal information to KGB. From the last conversation between David and Lorraine when he died, and the meeting where David and Bremovic were photographed, David told KGB Lorraine who was the CIA. David did I want to kill Lorraine with KGB's hands.
But who killed the spy mirror is still uncertain, because David killed the spy mirror is only Lorraine's side words, but only one thing is certain, that is, whether it is David or Lorraine, even if the other party did not do it, they will eventually kill. Spy glasses.
10. Who killed the French agent LaSalle?
I thought it was Lorraine who killed LaSalle. It was not necessary for David to kill LaSalle, because David only had to bring the list and return to England. There was no need to kill LaSalle at all. And Lorraine’s motive for killing Lassalle was too sufficient. First of all, Lorraine was too dangerous for Lorraine and might expose her multiple identities. Second Lorraine needed a good reason to kill David, and killing on impulse became an understandable excuse.
But when Lorraine sat in a daze next to Lassalle's corpse, behind which was the bright fireworks celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany, the background music sounded 99 Luftballons (ninety-nine red balloons). This German song is about the impact of World War II. Everyone wants to fight. Everyone is a fearless warrior. At the end of the song, there is nothing, no victor, no combat captain, no balloons, and nothing more. Down the deserted world.
At the same time David’s monologue "You thought you were upholding justice, but one day you woke up and found that you were just a demon's helper."
"The news reports say that there will be no more secrets. We all know that this is not true. There are too many unspeakable things in the world."
"After those sleepless nights, cheating friends, lovers, and even myself, playing miserable games in this miserable city, surrounded by traitors and liars."
"Tell you I only learned one thing, and that is that I love Berlin."
David asked Lorraine "Don't you notice that everyone around you died in the end?"
It doesn't matter who killed LaSalle and Spy Mirror here. Everyone is a product of the times. David and Lorraine are just to protect themselves. The upper level doesn't care about the exposure of the list, the agents on the list are exposed, they don't care whether they live or die, they don't care who killed whom, the upper level only cares that the dirty things they have done are exposed.
Berlin, a very cold city.
