Two early works by Martin Scorsese

"Who is knocking on my door? (1969) and Goodbye Alice (1974) were two of Martin Scorsese's early films. "Who is knocking on my door? "Before, Martin had only made some short films and won several awards at some small film festivals. "Who is knocking on my door? " is old Martin's debut feature film, telling the love story of a man and a woman, the story is bland, but the details are quite brilliant! Old Martin was still a poor man at the time, and this film was not easy to shoot. After the pre-shooting, Old Martin found that the material was not ideal, so he had to work hard on editing. It turns out that old Martin's imagination was forced out by poverty and embarrassment. "Who is knocking on my door? ” There are many places in the editing that turn corruption into magic, such as the seemingly meaningless passion scene, which can be called a stroke of genius. The film also "brazenly" inserted two paragraphs of Martin's commentary soundtrack as the main content, which was innocuous and surprised a little - it turns out that the inverse relationship between "low cost" and "imagination" is so! As me who has just started the film, the film has inspired me a lot, and I will pay tribute to old Martin in the editing of "Gospel of Love"!
"Goodbye Alice" is a "women's film" directed by Martin after completing his masterpiece "Mean Streets" ("Mean Streets", 1973). Before this film, the old Martin was considered to be a director who would only direct male actors to act - he could not do anything about actresses. Old Martin shut up those who held this prejudice with Goodbye Alice. "Goodbye Alice" tells the story of a bereaved woman's self-reliance and finding love, a very everyday warm sketch. Old Martin is best at those films with strong masculinity. "Goodbye Alice" proves that Old Martin's directing ability and skill have nothing to do with talent and personality.
Martin Sr. is pretty much my favorite American director — pretty much because sometimes I like Quentin more. His films have been watched a lot, and only "New York, New York", "Mrs. Butterfly", "The Color of Money" and "New York Story" are left. So far, the old Martin's films have always maintained a high level, there is no bad film. There are not many directors who have done this, but only Tarkovsky and Kubrick.
Both films have a commentary track by Martin Sr., which is similar to the book Scorsese on Scorsese.

Ignoring the cheesy Hollywood narrative, still watching the camera movement, the actors follow the camera schedule to present a natural and smooth performance, and the camera fits the character's state to excavate flashing and moving moments, and the two interact in a delicate balance. Comparable to the sense of humor of "The King of Comedy" and "The Wolf of Wall Street", the design and rehearsal are rarely downplayed. The most hilarious thing is the unrepeatable character. Ellen Burstyn's performance is very layered, down and out Self-confidence, sensitive, big, windy, pear blossoms and rain, almost perfectly integrates the innocence of a girl and the charm of a mature woman.

Why does a woman abandon everything to go with a man, and a man abandons everything is true love. The heroine's performance is very wonderful, the first thirty-five years of Alice's abandonment.

  • Alice: [singing] When you're awake the things you think, Come from the dreams you dream, Thought has wings, and lots of things, Are seldom what they seem, Sometimes you think you've lived before, All that you live today, Things you do come back to you, As though they knew the way, Oh the tricks your mind can play, It seems we stood and talked like this, before, We've looked at each other in the same way then, But I can't remember where or when...
