Officer Robert and Susie are a married couple who want a child, but have not been pregnant since Susie had a miscarriage. Judging from Robert's performance on the shooting range, his marksmanship is not very accurate, although he is training very seriously.
The story is very simple. In order to get rid of the embarrassment of life, Alex and Tamara desperately went to rob a bank and met Robert on duty. When fleeing by car, Robert shot and killed Tamara. Alex fled to his grandfather's house in the countryside to hide, and accidentally discovered that it was Robert who killed Tamara, raising the idea of revenge. Susie often went to her grandfather's house to take care of him, and she was a little fond of Alex. In order to want a child, she took the initiative to seduce Alex. Alex finally gave up the idea of revenge and lived peacefully in the countryside.
The story is simple, but the film's portrayal of characters and psychology is wonderful.
There are 5 relationships in the story.
Alex and Tamara's relationship;
Grandpa and Alex mending the relationship between grandfather and grandson;
Robert and Suzy's troubled marriage;
Suzy and Alex's revenge and cheating relationship,
Robert and Alek s hatred relationship.
They share the pain of losing a loved one, Alex losing Tamara, and Robert and Susie losing their three-month-old child. Grandpa lost his wife, but in the end they both found comfort in other people.
This movie seems to be talking about revenge, but it is actually talking about healing.
Alex loves Tamara deeply, but he can't bring Tamara a happy life, and he can only watch her as a prostitute to make a living.
Alex and grandpa had a cold relationship at first, he didn't even go to grandma's funeral because he was in jail, grandpa was very dissatisfied with it. But deep down, the lonely old man is happy to have the company of his grandson.
The relationship between Robert and Susie looks happy, but it is actually full of crisis, full of estrangement and knots.
The relationship between Susie and Alex is one of derailment and revenge. Suzy loves Robert, but she wants a child, and Robert can't give her it, and she wants to have a relationship with Alex, whether it's because of the child or because she's bored with Robert, anyway she does. As for Alex, Susie went from being irritable and ruthless at first trying to take revenge to gradually calming down her anger and being comforted.
Alex is essentially a kind and gentle person, just like the evaluation given to him by the brothel owner: You are too It's gentle, you want to be rough, but the personality isn't, and people can quickly see that you're not that kind of person.
So when he faced many things, his emotions were very forbearing, even suppressed.
When Tamara fell to his death after being shot, he parked the car in the woods for a full minute and sat there silently, breathing and crying. Then he got out of the car, took the money from the gun on his back, took off his jacket and put it back on, crying and wiping away his tears as he walked.
Then he went to his grandpa's house, borrowed a car, and went to the hotel to pick up Tamara's luggage. He sat on the bed in the hotel and looked at Tamara's photo, crying repressedly, his back trembling.
He wanted to kill Robert to take revenge on Tamara. Several times he went to the pond where Robert would go for his morning run and waited for him.
The first time he had an affair with Susie, he was very cruel and rude, but afterward he subconsciously lifted the chair that fell to the ground.
He wanted to be rough, but he really wasn't that kind of person, so he had a dialogue with Suzy afterwards.
"Why are you doing this? Are you tired of your cop?"
Suzy's answer was also good: "No, he's my husband. I just want to do it."
Alex taunted her: "God will what did you
say Will your actions embarrass you? What have you been through?"
Alex looked at her and didn't speak for a few seconds. Then he asked, "Do you have kids?"
Susie said, "No."
Alex said, "But there's a children's room upstairs."
Susie said, "But we don't have kids." This is Susie's pain.
When Alex was leaving, a woman's instinct led Suzy to ask: "Why are you always like this? Has anyone done anything to you?"
Alex said, "You better not know."
Susie Xi asked him, "Will you still come?"
He left in a hurry.
After experiencing this incident, Robert was in a complicated mood and worked harder to chop wood, but his grandfather thought he was starting to face life seriously and he was very happy.
Alex was playing with the pistol in the room, then he went to the pond where Robert was looking at the picture of Tamara. He couldn't help looking at the picture of Tamara, the girl he accidentally beat to death. Robert continued his morning jog, and Alex aimed his pistol at him in the distance, but failed to fire.
Alex meets Suzy at the supermarket, and Suzy invites her to her house again at night.
Alex went home and chopped wood again. It was raining outside, and his movements were no longer as violent as before, but rather a preoccupied machine.
In the film, Alex has been moving wood, sawing wood, and chopping wood. From the beginning of venting his sorrow to the process of gradually calming down, it is all expressed through his movements, frequency, amplitude, and strength when chopping wood. Chai can show so much inner drama, this setting is very good.
And the dialogue between Alex and grandpa at the dinner table twice is also very clever.
The first dinner table dialogue occurs when Alex just learns that Robert killed Tamara. Alex and his grandfather were having dinner, two lonely men who had just lost their lovers, with only simple bread, sausages and cheese on the table. Robert's expression was grim.
Alex asked Grandpa, "Do you miss her?"
Grandpa said, "It's frustrating to work alone. But I'll see her again. She's waiting for me."
That night, full of thoughts, Robert fell into the pain of missing Tamara, and he was determined to take revenge on Robert. At night, he turned out the window, flashed a flashlight, walked through the woods, and walked alone in the dark for a long time, and the night was as thick as the hatred in his heart.
The second dinner table dialogue takes place the morning after she and Susie have sex. Alex's demeanor was soft. Grandpa married Alex and told him that a man needs a woman or he will be stupid.
This time Alex went to the pond and met Robert, he greeted Robert, walked away as if nothing had happened, and then aimed his gun at him in the distance behind Robert, but did not shoot. At this time, he had actually let go of the idea of killing Robert.
Then he was invited again to try Susie.
This time, Alex was not so repulsive. He talked about Tamara, his eyes were sad, his tone was sad, and his hand kept rubbing the foot of the wine glass.
Susie was keenly aware of his desire for revenge, and she advised him not to kill for revenge. She naively wanted to comfort him, but she didn't know Alex's complicated psychology.
When the two were lying in the children's room afterwards, Robert went home. He was unable to work normally due to psychological problems and needed psychological treatment. He wept and poured out his pain to Suzy, reiterating that he was really aiming for the tires, and showing her pictures of Tamara. Alex quietly left.
Grandpa played the accordion, and Alex was chopping wood again. His movements are fast and precise, and efficient, suggesting that his heart is opening.
Grandpa's health is getting worse and worse, lying on the bed, still thinking that the farm is not taken care of. Alex promises that he will stay and look after everything. At this moment, he let go of the idea of revenge and wanted to live a good life again.
So he went to the pond again to wait for Robert Morning.
They start chatting. Two men sat side by side on a bench, looking at the peaceful pond, each with their own thoughts.
Alex took the initiative to ask Robert, "Are you the cop who shot people?"
Robert said, "Yes, I am."
Alex said, "It must have been a painful experience."
Robert lowered his head in frustration, hunched his back and said, "I don't want to go through it again."
Alex looked at him for a long time with a complicated expression, and continued: "I guess you're targeting the bank robber, right? Is it?"
Robert said, "I was aiming for the tires...but I didn't."
Alex was not convinced: "But I don't understand that the tires are low, you must have been aiming too high at that time. ."
Robert straightened and lowered his head again: "Everything happened so fast, I don't know what I was thinking at that time."
He stood up and walked to the edge of the pond, his back depressed and painful.
Alex asked him from behind: "Are you afraid of the robber?"
Robert was puzzled.
Alex said, "You killed that girl, and if he finds you and wants to shoot you? For revenge."
Robert was silent for a moment, then said calmly, "Let him come, let him." Then he said After a paragraph: "But I have something to ask him. Why did he take the girl in the first place? The girl didn't drive to help him escape, he robbed the bank alone, it was pointless to take the girl, why did he take the girl like an outing? She? The whole thing happened because the girl was there for no reason. That's what I asked him."
Alex was speechless.
Robert left, and Alex stood alone by the pond for a long time, throwing a stone hard, breaking the calm of the pond.
Susie is pregnant, and she brings the news to Robert, bringing a little joy to Robert, who can't help himself in the pain and depression.
Suzy went to Alex and asked Alex not to tell Robert about their relationship, and said that they would not meet again in the future. Then she saw Tamara's picture on the table, and she suddenly understood. Again she asked Alex not to say anything about him and her. Alex agreed.
Near the end of the movie, Alex picks up apples under the apple tree.
I wish the movie could end at this point, and it does.
Then the subtitles slowly rose, no music, no pictures, only the rustling of insects and birds in the quiet countryside, the sound of cars in the distance, and the faint chirping of church bells. Then, it rained, rustling.
On the road of revenge, Alex finally obtained not only the peace of pacifying hatred, but also the redemption and purification of his soul.
Great movie, recommend it.
Last but not least, the pond, at the beginning of the film, there is more than a minute of the pond. This pond plays a very important role in the story. It is a pond with its own emotional effect. You can experience it yourself when you watch the movie. It foreshadows and echoes the ending.
