When I first saw the title "Walking with Grandma", I wasn't interested. Probably in my impression, my grandmother has solidified into the image of a gentle, kind and amiable elderly person.

Then this movie is probably a family warmth movie. At most, there will be some sensational plots to deceive the tears of girls. I think there should be no surprises.

But in fact, the film won the National Critics Association's Top 10 Independent Films of 2015. Directed at this title, I decided to take a look. After watching it, I found that this movie is indeed amazing and extraordinary. Although it is still a warm family film, it is not known where it is higher than most warm films.

Independent films are often accompanied by the characteristics of low-cost niches, and they cannot be compared with commercial blockbusters in terms of scenes or casts, so they can only start with storytelling techniques and details to give the audience some subtle surprises.

The movie does exactly that with its script structure. There are not many characters in the movie, only a few people, the protagonists are probably grandma Elle, mother, granddaughter Sage and grandma's young girlfriend.

However, the theme of the film is very broad. The film not only involves issues such as homosexuality, unmarried pregnancy, abortion, and fertilization, but also the soundtrack of the protagonist is basically female. It can be said that this film is completely a feminist film.

In the film, the three women, the grandmother, the mother, and the granddaughter, come from the same family, each with its own distinctive brand of the times, which is actually a microcosm of the entire female community in the United States.

Granny Elle was an old punk, a poet, a lesbian, cynical, feminist. She grew up in the "fashionable sixties", an era of freedom, pleasure, sexual liberation and anti-war. The famous feminists Betty Friedan and Simone de Beauvoir were her idols.

My mother was born in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s, in the era of the Great Depression after the Cold War. A mother who grows up in this environment naturally becomes an independent and pragmatic woman, and her career success makes her have extremely high requirements for life and work, and is quite strict and even harsh on her subordinates and daughters.

The granddaughter Sage was born at the end of the last century, a typical young, simple, ignorant American girl. I haven't experienced the hardships of life, I haven't read advanced books, I'm fashion-conscious, I'm keen on gossip, I'm dating bad boys, I'm afraid of my strict mother, I'm afraid of going to hell for abortion.

The main story of the movie takes place in just one day. The film threads a long day through different points and people.

In the morning, the old punk grandma and her young girlfriend quarreled and broke up.

While she was still grieving over the breakup, her granddaughter Sage came to her to borrow money for an abortion. Because the granddaughter is afraid to face her strict mother, she has to come to the old punk grandmother Elle.

But the old punk is worthy of being an old punk, and he loves freedom. The abortion scheduled for the granddaughter was on the same afternoon.

So, on this sunny day, one old and one young had to hit the road for an unexpected journey of raising money.

Together, they went to their granddaughter's scumbag boyfriend, grandmother's tattoo artist friend, coffee shop owner, and grandmother's ex-husband, but they failed to raise enough money for an abortion. In the end, they could only humbly ask their mother for help together.

As their fundraising process develops and they meet all kinds of people, Grandma Elle's life unfolds slowly on this day, and the family's story slowly becomes clear.

When I was young, my grandmother didn't realize that she was gay. She didn't realize it until she married her husband and had children. Because she could not accept the child, she quietly went to have an abortion and left her husband. That's why my grandmother's ex-husband didn't lend them money in the end, because he couldn't accept an abortion.

After leaving my ex-husband, I don't know why my grandmother had a child from a one-night stand with a stranger, and finally gave birth. This is the mother in the movie. Later, my grandmother finally realized that she had always been gay, and finally decided to live with her beloved girlfriend and raised a child together.

Just a few years ago, my lover died unfortunately, and my grandmother became eccentric again.

In this way, my grandmother's life was put together into a complete story in constant dialogue, and the family's contradictions and old wounds were slowly torn apart. The common problem among the three generations of women is that they do not know how to communicate with others, and can only avoid or refuse to communicate with their families in their own ways.

In the end, love and affection triumphed over pride and dignity, and the pain Sage endured through the abortion finally evoked a sense of same-sex identity among the three women. When the matter is finally resolved, the grandmother's journey home alone ends.

At the end of the film, grandma takes a taxi to her young girlfriend's house to beg for peace, but the taxi driver who should have been waiting for her drove away. The irritable punk grandma should have been scolding, but at this time, the grandmother was moved by her family and lover, became tolerant and calm, laughed a few times and walked home slowly.

What surprised me the most was that the old punk, who was not used to everything, became extremely gentle because of his family and love, and smiled casually towards everything.
