Double resentment

What kind of courage must an actor who dared to take on such a play in that era have. The most outstanding part of the two actors is Shirley MacLaine's hysterical confession scene and Audrey Hepburn's heart-wrenching eye scene when he saw his friend commit suicide. It is no exaggeration to say that these two scenes are worth one person. Oscar.
Generally speaking, male protagonists of such movies are annoying, but this male protagonist is very likable. The most pleasing scene is probably the male protagonist spanking the arrogant child. I have never seen such a brazen person, and there are many ugly people at such a young age. Also, in the end, Hepburn ignored everyone including the male protagonist and strode out of the cemetery, which should be the only thing that makes people feel good in this depressing film.

A very classic movie! I was deeply moved by Hepburn and Shirley's performances! Who do you guys refer to when you say that Hepburn's acting skills are poor? I'm very puzzled. Shirley's bitter confession and Hepburn's eyes at the moment when she saw Shirley committing suicide, and finally walking with her head held high are classic scenes. The effects of the black and white film and the tension of the soundtrack are amazing!

The Children's Hour quotes

  • Dr. Joe Cardin: We can't go on like this. Everything I say is made to mean something else!

Karen: I guess every word has a new meaning. Child, love, friend, woman. There aren't many safe words anymore. Even 'marriage' doesn't have the same meaning anymore.

Dr. Joe Cardin: It does to me, and it should to you, if

    [he pauses]

    Karen: If what?

  • Martha: Cooking always makes me feel better... Well, I suppose I'll have to feed the duchess, even vultures have to eat. I baked a cake. And you know what, I found a bottle of wine. We'll have a good dinner. Where's Joe?

    Karen: Gone.

Martha: Patient? Will he be back in time for dinner?

    Karen: No.

Martha: Then we'll wait dinner for him... What's the matter, Karen?

Karen: He won't be back anymore.

Martha: You mean he won't be back anymore, tonight.

Karen: He won't be back at all.
