- you never once showed signs of reforming
- reforming?
— yes, rehabilitated
— I wonder if you know what that word means.
The unabridged version of Webster's International Dictionary says the word comes from the Latin root Habilis, which is defined as: to restore dignity.
Have you considered that part of your job is to give a person the dignity he once had?
Your only interest is how he behaves.
You said it to me once a long time ago, and I never forget: "You should behave as we want".
For 35 years, you didn't back down an inch from your position, you wanted your inmates, danced like marionettes outside the door, and it was all in compliance with the mandatory values you established, in compliance with your requirements for obedience, for behavior. The norm, and even your sense of morality, Harvey, that's why you failed, you and your entire science of prison management failed, because you stole from prisoners the most important thing in their lives-- their personalities.
After going out they are lost, like robots, with a step-by-step life, but have a deep, deep hatred in their hearts for what you have imposed on them, and once they have a chance to take revenge on society, they won't let it go. The result? More than half returned to prison.
After listening to the above "horror" conversation, I suddenly realized that some so-called school education is no different from prison education. The difference is that the former gives partial freedom but is depicted as a so-called "new" from a blank sheet of paper, while the latter is compulsory education to "rehabilitate". As well as some rhetoric that promotes "collective" - "you should behave in accordance with our requirements", "according to the mandatory values you have established, your requirements for obedience, norms for behavior, and even your sense of morality ".
——Some education and some propaganda received in the past are "toxic".
A good movie can really purify the mind and purify the brain!

Note: "The Bird Breeder of Alcatraz" was watched at the end of December 2015, and on the last night of the New Year's Day holiday in 2016, I found the film while watching "The Shawshank Redemption" There is also a bird breeder, so he took the opportunity to write down his feelings to prevent forgetting.
(The scene appeared during Andy’s first meal in prison. He found a bug, and an old inmate next to him saw it, asked for the bug, and fed it to the young bird that was still in his pocket. I don’t know if it’s an Easter egg buried by the director, or just a coincidence)
