At the beginning, a second-person narration and a moving train were used to pull out the story. No one appeared, and it felt like something was happening. With hypnotic narration accompanied by the rhythm of the train, it seemed to be brought into the story behind by hypnosis! It is also a dream and a reality, and it is also a fantasy! Not happy to see it! The hero is a German-American! After the end of World War II, he was arranged by his German uncle on a train into Europe. He originally came to know Germany with a neutral attitude, but he gradually fell into a contradictory situation. On the train, he saw some of the Americans' remnants of the Nazis. The brutal execution made the hero Kessler fearful, but he fell in love with the daughter of the Nazi family. Kessler obviously did not support the Nazis! Taking advantage of the roar of the train, a boy on the train suddenly shot and killed the Americans in the train, which shocked Kessler. Kessler was full of doubts, whether this is the Nazi ideology that has eroded children or not. Do German children treat Americans like foreign invaders and barbarians coming to their hometown to defend and counterattack? I think it's more of the latter! The film uses black and white and color switching to highlight the unresolved and tense rhythm of the story! Made some scenes even more impressive!
For the dilemma, the hero finally chose love! But the wife was still taken away, accompanied by another train drifting away. Within minutes of parting, the Nazi woman asked Kessler to blow up the train he was on! Kessler did as he did and set up a time bomb. Before getting off the bus, he was going to persuade his uncle to get off together. Due to the lack of time, he did not make it clear that he had jumped! At that time, Kessler's heart was extremely contradictory! Jumped out of the car and went to catch up with the train soon to defuse the bomb that was about to explode! But in the end Kessler died on that train! After all, the bomb went off and fell into the river, and Kessler was unable to swim out of the water in time! This is probably the biggest irony of the whole film! Post-war Nazi Germany is full of killing and despair. It is difficult for us to define who is right and who is wrong. The sacrificed Nazi Germany is just fighting for the country, and the United States is also trying to stop the Nazis to maintain peace!
I once saw an interview with Lars Von Trier. He joked that he was actually a Jew, but he was a little sympathetic to the German Nazis. Maybe Feng Dao didn't know how to joke, maybe most people didn't understand such humor, so that later All circles of public opinion strongly condemned him! History is always written by the victors, so who is right and who is wrong can be explained in one sentence?
Let’s talk about returning to the movie. Director Feng pushes the film to a climax with a sense of rhythm that is both real and imaginary, realistic and illusory, and relaxed and powerful. The extreme comes to an abrupt end, Perfect, perfect!
