Another perspective on Nazi Germany

Europa, one of the European trilogy, the director produced a dazzling magic and realistic color, with more than dazzling skills, making the audience seem to be in a hypnotic state, it is a work with a strong personal artistic style! The tone and the way of shooting are fascinating! This is also a major work by Feng Dao who is famous internationally!

At the beginning, a second-person narration and a moving train were used to pull out the story. No one appeared, and it felt like something was happening. With hypnotic narration accompanied by the rhythm of the train, it seemed to be brought into the story behind by hypnosis! It is also a dream and a reality, and it is also a fantasy! Not happy to see it! The hero is a German-American! After the end of World War II, he was arranged by his German uncle on a train into Europe. He originally came to know Germany with a neutral attitude, but he gradually fell into a contradictory situation. On the train, he saw some of the Americans' remnants of the Nazis. The brutal execution made the hero Kessler fearful, but he fell in love with the daughter of the Nazi family. Kessler obviously did not support the Nazis! Taking advantage of the roar of the train, a boy on the train suddenly shot and killed the Americans in the train, which shocked Kessler. Kessler was full of doubts, whether this is the Nazi ideology that has eroded children or not. Do German children treat Americans like foreign invaders and barbarians coming to their hometown to defend and counterattack? I think it's more of the latter! The film uses black and white and color switching to highlight the unresolved and tense rhythm of the story! Made some scenes even more impressive!

For the dilemma, the hero finally chose love! But the wife was still taken away, accompanied by another train drifting away. Within minutes of parting, the Nazi woman asked Kessler to blow up the train he was on! Kessler did as he did and set up a time bomb. Before getting off the bus, he was going to persuade his uncle to get off together. Due to the lack of time, he did not make it clear that he had jumped! At that time, Kessler's heart was extremely contradictory! Jumped out of the car and went to catch up with the train soon to defuse the bomb that was about to explode! But in the end Kessler died on that train! After all, the bomb went off and fell into the river, and Kessler was unable to swim out of the water in time! This is probably the biggest irony of the whole film! Post-war Nazi Germany is full of killing and despair. It is difficult for us to define who is right and who is wrong. The sacrificed Nazi Germany is just fighting for the country, and the United States is also trying to stop the Nazis to maintain peace!
I once saw an interview with Lars Von Trier. He joked that he was actually a Jew, but he was a little sympathetic to the German Nazis. Maybe Feng Dao didn't know how to joke, maybe most people didn't understand such humor, so that later All circles of public opinion strongly condemned him! History is always written by the victors, so who is right and who is wrong can be explained in one sentence?

Let’s talk about returning to the movie. Director Feng pushes the film to a climax with a sense of rhythm that is both real and imaginary, realistic and illusory, and relaxed and powerful. The extreme comes to an abrupt end, Perfect, perfect!

Lars von Trier subverts the Hollywood genre with a relatively traditional narrative method: women choose the latter between love and ideology, subverting spy films; the train is finally bombed, and the iron gates that cannot be opened after tens of seconds are down, Disaster movie turned upside down...

Lars Von is a true cinematic revolutionary. He belongs to the kind of director and artist with subversive qualities, and he often sees bold deconstruction and innovation of narrative language in his works. If you just look at the story, "Europa Express" is an ordinary spy-war romance with a shining noir style. But under his avant-garde and experimental lenses, Death of Idealism becomes rich, dreamy and charismatic. Film history is driven by such films.

Europa quotes

  • [opening lines]

Narrator: You will now listen to my voice. My voice will help you and guide you still deeper into Europa. Every time you hear my voice, with every word and every number, you will enter into a still deeper layer - open, relaxed and receptive. I shall now count from one to ten. On the count of ten, you will be in Europa. I say: one. And as you focus your attention entirely on my voice, you will slowly begin to relax. Two - your hands and your fingers are getting warmer and heavier. Three - the warmth is spreading through your arms, to your shoulders and your neck. Four - your feet and your legs get heavier. Five - the warmth is spreading to the whole of your body. On six, I want you to go deeper. I say: six. And the whole of your relaxed body is slowly beginning to sink. Seven - you go deeper and deeper and deeper. Eight - on every breath you take, you go deeper. Nine - you are floating. On the mental count of ten, you will be in Europa. Be there at ten. I say: ten.

Narrator: In the morning, the sleeper has found rest on the bottom of the river. The force of the stream has opened the door and is leading you on. Above your body, people are still alive. Follow the river as days go by. Head for the ocean that mirrors the sky. You want to wake up to free yourself of the image of Europa. But it is not possible.
