Nic Pizzolatto tries to dig the world deeper with more dark elements, including the most ugly side of human nature, the twisted misunderstanding among main characters, and vulnerable "trust" in their relationship. He brings lots of things in the original plot, seaming simple but feeling sorrow.
However, his brilliant idea only takes effect on the "right" characters. We can't praise more on Matthew McConaughey or Woody Harrelson. For Matthew, he won the Academy Award in the same year, while for Woody, he has brought a lot in Natural Born Killers and so many shows later on. Both of them hold the first season on that level, and they are executive producers for this series. It's not just Nic, but so many crew account for the success for Season 1, telling the true story of True Detective.
Frankly speaking, I doubt Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn or Taylor Kitsch. I don't think they are "qualified" for this True Detective story. The personal spirit behind story, it needs valor, like a flame, sparking in the dark sky. Colin Farrell died peacefully in his ending, but is it, the consequence like this? For Vince Vaughn, he needs to match up Kelly Reilly's performance. Two ladies portrait their courage in the second season, but those men, only exhibit their hesitation.
I don't know whether a "third" season should be confirmed. The story is fascinating, but it deserves better actors. Some guys just can't reach to the dark side.
