[Series Completion Project] "007 Eighteen: Tomorrow's Empire"

Perhaps it is preconceived. As the "Bond" most watched by fans of our generation, it seems that Pierce Brosnan's status is always higher than that of his predecessors. Frankly speaking, during the completion of the "007" series, I have a good impression of several major "Bond" actors, whether it is the romantic and chic Connery, or the elegant and witty Moore, or the cold and courageous. Each of the Daltons has its own unique style. However, in Pierce Brosnan, we can more or less find the shadows of those predecessors, and they are just right and very natural. Of course, standing on the shoulders of the predecessors is close to its role in shaping it.

After "Golden Eye", the Chinese translations of Brosnan's three "007" movies coincidentally all have the word "日"-"Empire Tomorrow", "Black Sun Crisis" and "Death Another Day" . Generally speaking, all 007 movies can be regarded as anti-terrorism stories, but compared with many relatively similar plots, the content of "Empire of Tomorrow" still has a certain practical significance. The villain in the play is the media giant Carver, who controls huge resources. He vainly attempted to artificially create a war between China and Britain, thus achieving a conspiracy to replace the Chinese government and monopolize the broadcast rights in China. As we all know, the media as the "fourth power" in today's society has more and more energy, not only can influence public opinion, but can even control the country's political situation and even international relations. Once this kind of power is mastered by people who are hard to fill or have no integrity, the sense of responsibility of the media will often be replaced by profit and ratings. Justice and human life will become worthless. Many works on media violence have repeatedly shown us. Had terrible consequences.

After the release of "Empire of Tomorrow", many commentators felt that the role of "Carver" was suspected of implying media tycoon Rupert Murdoch. The biggest problem with Murdoch being unwelcome by Western mainstream media is his endless pursuit of commercial interests, just like Carver in the film. Of course, Murdoch was "uncritical" in terms of ideology. For example, his frequent contact with China is another problem that he has been criticized by the West. However, it is interesting that the collapse of the Carver Group in "Empire of Tomorrow" is precisely the result of the concerted efforts of British and Chinese agents. Everyone should pay attention to such a time point. The film's release year is 1997, which coincides with the return of Hong Kong. Therefore, the drama of "Sino-British Harmony" seems to cater to the main theme.

The quality of "Empire of Tomorrow" is still very good, the style is similar to the classic action movies of the 90s, the plot is compact and the rhythm is bright. From the speeding chase in Hamburg, to the street fighting in Saigon, to the final battle in the South China Sea, every stop has a spectacular sight. The Bond equipment in this episode has been upgraded, especially the BMW 750 that has earned enough attention, which is another successful ad placement after the Aston Martin DB5 in "Goldfinger". But for Chinese audiences, Michelle Yeoh is undoubtedly the focus of attention. In fact, the performance of the first Chinese Bang girl in the history of 007 far exceeded expectations. With her abundance and commitment to work, she not only won the praise of Brosnan, but was also invited by the producer to continue her job as a Bang girl (and was later declined by Michelle Yeoh). Moreover, the role of "Lin Hui" she played also broke through the vase image of most Bang girls. She has a full personality and is quite popular. From the current point of view, Michelle Yeoh at the age of thirty-five is both mature and playful, as well as three-pointed heroic, and is a very attractive oriental beauty.
