Dreams are always out of reach, and here we are...

On Friday, I was looking for entrepreneurial projects on "Unreliable Business", and I stumbled upon an article "Several Movies Entrepreneurs Have to Watch". After watching it, they were basically "Forrest Gump" and the like. The one I haven't seen is "Tucker: The Man and His Dream". So I was very curious and decided to see how good this movie is. So I searched and found that there were only film introductions, probably because the film was very old, 1988, when I was just a few months old. It has been estimated that it has been almost 30 years from now, which makes me even more curious to find this movie. So it took 2 hours to find it. Only the PPS said it could be viewed, but it still couldn't be opened. It prompted to download the PPS software, so I downloaded and installed it, but the software version of PPS still couldn't be played. In the end, I finally found the viewing link on the almighty potato (but when I searched for this movie on the potato, it said that there was no such movie, anyway, Thank you potato, I finally found the link).

After watching this movie, it reminded me of "Jobs", but although it was nearly 30 years earlier, it was 10 times better than the Steve Jobs movie. The movie is also based on real events.

What kind of story is this movie telling?

The protagonist of the film is called Tucker, and his dream is to build the ultimate and greatest car. He was born in an unknown town in the United States. He loved cars since he was a child, and later got married and worked in a telephone company, but he never forgot his dream.

So when he was 30 years old, he went to Chicago (the city of automobiles at that time, now it is bankrupt, in the age of no computers, that place is equivalent to the current Silicon Valley) to understand the car, he did not miss any opportunity to understand the car Also met the best automotive engineer of his era. But he didn't have the opportunity to do anything related to cars at that time either. After World War II, all motor yards served the war. He had the opportunity to go to a company that made military cars, and according to his idea car company produced an "armored car" with a thick shell, very fast speed, plus a transparent bulletproof shell. This design saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers in the war at the time.

After the war he quit his job and started to pursue his dream - to be the best and most beautiful car in the world, car of tomorrow.
He said that after the war everyone wanted a car, but I think the current car is too Ugly and slow, we're going to manufacture and invent the best car in the world. He took out a piece of paper and on it was a car similar to today's Porsche. This new "torpedo" brand car using aerodynamic principles was called "the car of tomorrow" and he announced: We want to make the car of tomorrow. (Same as Steve Jobs said that everyone wants a cell phone now, but the cell phones are so bad). Everyone was moved by his idea, very excited and happy. But that was just a blueprint for an idea, and he didn't know anything about the technology of car making.

Step 1: In his home, except for his 4 children, his friends, the great car engineer, all live in a big house with them, and at night he and the engineer discuss the feasibility of the idea. Engineers believe that making such a car is theoretically no problem, but requires a lot of money, as well as the best steel and engine.

Step 2: Invite an investor to talk about this idea at his house. The bad guy is that the investor stepped on the dog's poop as soon as he got off the car at his door (they have 10 dogs in the house). Like this unfortunate beginning, this time it didn't work out. Investors thought his idea was whimsical and let him forget it. If he was Einstein, maybe this thing might work, even though Einstein didn't understand business, at least Einstein understood technology. And who are you? You have noting. forget about it you have no chance. He had nothing but an idea because the car was already controlled by the big giants at that time. And tucker said that what I want to do is revolutionary, and future cars will need to do this, and what I want to build is the car of tomorrow. The investor shook his head and left. But this did not dampen his enthusiasm, and he wants to continue to realize his dream.

When he was out for dinner with his family, he saw a magazine on the ordering table, and an advertisement on it caught his attention - it was an advertisement for a real estate, and there were only design drawings and renderings on it. He asked the boss how Look? The boss said: People don't buy task, but the buy the people they trust, people they can do it. Suddenly he found inspiration from selling off-plan real estate, he thought, why can't cars be sold like this? So he also started to sell his future car in magazines like this: Taucker. (Isn’t this how Xiaomi also sells “futures” mobile phones?)

When the magazine advertisements were sent out, the pre-orders were like snowflakes from all over the country Floating over -- people love their "tomorrow" cars, they're so happy. This further strengthened his dream of building a car. For a time he became a celebrity in the headlines and everyone knew about the Tucker car.

Step 4: This time, the investor who had rejected him took the initiative to find him as his partner and offer advice for him. Like Jobs, this investor plays a very important role. Of course, in addition to money, they stand In a trench (a good investor can help him realize a dream, the value of the investor is immeasurable, it will save him a lot of detours, and such an investor must be patient and willing to fight side by side with entrepreneurs). And suddenly one day someone he didn't know came to him, introduced himself as a designer, redesigned a plan based on the actual conditions based on the content of his advertisement, and showed it to Tucker. Originally he thought Tucker would criticize him but suddenly Tucker said, buddy you've joined us. With designers, engineers, and investors, government permission is required.

Step 5: His investors arranged a roadshow for him, mainly investors and the government, in order to get government approval and raise more money. He emphasized on the road show that the current car is very unsafe, there is no seat belt, and many people are killed by garbage cars every year, and what he wants to produce is a safe and beautiful car with seat belts and more space. But he almost screwed up the road show, because the PPT he put on was full of disgusting car accident scenes, and the investors below were eating steak! One by one they left the scene.

Just when his partner criticized him, he was confident in his speech. Only the last government official said to go to his office next Wednesday. That's how they got government approval. After obtaining government approval, Tucker used an old pre-war factory in Chicago as his experimental site. Tucker and the mechanics worked day and night, and they had to produce 50 cars in their first year. When his investors called the Wall Street Report to find out that Tucker didn't even have a demo of a car, he almost fainted. Later, his investment consortium learned of the news and asked them to create a demo that could run within 60 days, otherwise they would not invest. This is simply something that ordinary people cannot do.

Step 6: Dreams are always beautiful, but reality is cruel. Their car space and engine configuration simply wouldn't be possible according to the blueprint, let alone 50 cars a year from now. But Tucker was determined to stick to the original standard. Time passed quickly, and they had nothing but people and empty factories at the moment. So Tucker understands what they need if they want to make a demo? Engineers say wheels, casings, engines and more. But the main thing is Time, we need more time to do it. Because the average car takes 9 months to demo 60 days is unimaginable. Later, the self-recommended engineer gave suggestions for the wheel. Although it was different from the original design, tucker still listened to his suggestion and gave him the right to modify it. He said: I need your help. (This is very important) . They found a lot of raw materials from the car scrapyard for experiments. His son happened to get a professional automotive engineer degree and also joined the manufacture of cars. They stayed in the laboratory every day and covered with oil. (It's a lot like Jobs and Woz tinkered with computers in the garage)
24 hours a day and night. And Tucker went everywhere to sell his cars, shoot commercials, and investors kept looking for follow-up investments for him.

Step 7: Things seemed to be going well but quickly got into trouble, because the 60 days went by so fast, and he had to let the reporters and everyone see the product on the 60th day. He arranged a grand product launch event and invited investors, governments, newspapers and magazines from all over the country. Two days before the press conference and his car hadn't had wheels on yet, and it had caught fire several times, it was basically impossible to complete, he got angry and got into trouble like a mountain. At this time, his investment partner came to his home to buy gifts and clothes for his children and encouraged him. (I'm very moved, because there are very few investors who send charcoal in the snow).

Finally, a few minutes before the press conference, the car was put on the wheels, but the press conference was about to start, but the car was not installed yet.
Thousands of people came to see the car, and people were full of expectations. But the car languished behind the stage and caught fire.

Step 8: Finally, when people were about to throw the bottle in complete disappointment, the car finally made its debut. Caused a great sensation!

The ninth step: After the Demo car came out, he began to take his car to participate in wars all over the world, and every time he was the protagonist. Because of this success and sensation, other giants were jealous, so they began to plan the government to investigate Tuker, and gave many harsh conditions. A bunch of suppliers who had supplied parts to him took advantage of the situation. The price was 3 times the original price and could not provide the volume. small engine. And because one of the biggest investors, seeing the prospect of the car, started fighting for the management of the company, the board got into infighting, ready to kick him out of the board, making rude impossible demands like the car must be removed engine. Newspapers are also full of negative articles about tucker being a liar.

He was in trouble again, and just when he was devastated by the matter, a phone call came to him, a strange man in the physics world who built airplanes, because he was moved by the story of his pursuit of dreams, and gave him a jet engine of his own making. With this engine, his car speed can already reach the first and a lot more space and a lot of weight have been reduced. After the test, it is very good. This is a revolutionary innovation and destroys the conspiracy of many people.

Step 10: Just when everyone was happy that the experiment was successful, his investor had to resign. Because other giant coalition governments find fault with them, the result is that if they can't build 50 cars in a year, they will be shut down and all investment will be lost. Investors are worried about this problem, he said when i was young, my mother told me , do not get close to the people who catch the dream. He said that he wanted to make a profit in his investment, but what he might get here in Tuker is tuker's dream. In the end he didn't go.

Step 11: Cars are being produced one by one, and when 47 cars are produced, the government begins to investigate tucker, fabricating various trumped-up charges, consuming his time, and even closing his factory. But he did not compromise, and cleverly used the media to seek justice for himself.

The government charged them with misusing money and not making cars. Finally, the day before the verdict, they built 50 cars. Before the final day of sentencing, he put all 50 cars in front of the court, but the court still said they did not build a car. Faced with the stark truth, the court is still lying. Many of his employees on the scene were aggrieved and shed tears.

Finally, a man found his conscience and said to give him a minute to state: he said when i was a child, he talked about the American dream, fairness and justice, no matter where you come from, the opportunity to realize your dreams, your own dreams, etc. In the end, the audience was moved.

The end result is that he wins Tuker a huge success!

But the real story is that Tucker was sentenced to shut down the factory, founder Tucker died of cancer six years later, and many of the 50 cars are still in use today. The end credits show a photo of the real tucker. The end credits say that despite the closure of the Tucker Motor Park, his inventions and creations, courage will always live in our hearts.

The stories and twists and turns of making dreams come true are moving. Like Steve Jobs, he was a dreamer and acted, he wanted to combine art and technology perfectly. There is also Frankenstein in the movie, Tesla who is greater than Edison. (Tesla posters even appeared in the debate after the movie)
These are heroes that I admire very much. I hope that I can pursue my dreams like them and keep moving forward!

An article said of Tucker:

If any man was ahead of his time, it was Preston Tucker. His short-lived auto company turned out what was perhaps the most forward-thinking automobile in history. With features like an integrated roll bar, quick -change engine, and central headlight for seeing around corners, it combined innovation with a customer-centered focus. Unfortunately, 1948 technology wasn't up to the task of fulfilling Tucker's true vision, and his dream went the way of disco and the dodo bird. Sometimes genius just isn't enough.

Later I checked the director of the film: it turned out to be the director of Coppolado's "The Godfather". And the life story is twisty, like this movie.

This movie also starred Jeff Bridges, the star of a movie I liked very much, How to Betray Your Family.

Tucker: The Man and His Dream quotes

  • Preston Tucker: [making his closing arguments to the jury] ... When I was a boy, I used to, uh... I used to read all about Edison, and the Wright brothers... Mr. Ford, they were, they were my heroes... 'rags to riches' that's not just the name of a book; that's, what this country was all about!... We invented the free enterprise system, where anybody, no matter who he was, where he came from, what class he belonged to... If he came up with a better idea, about ANYTHING, there's no limit to how far he could go... I grew up a generation too late I guess because now the way the system works... The loner; the dreamer; the CRACKPOT, who, comes up with some CRAZY IDEA that everybody LAUGHS at, that LATER, turns out to REVOLUTIONIZE THE WORLD... HE'S SQUASHED, FROM ABOVE, BEFORE HE EVEN GETS HIS HEAD OUT OF THE WATER, BECAUSE THE BUREAUCRATS, THEY'D RATHER KILL A NEW IDEA THAN LET IT ROCK THE BOAT!... IF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WERE ALIVE TODAY, HE'D BE THROWN IN JAIL FOR SAILING A KITE WITHOUT A LICENSE!

    [jury laughs]

Preston Tucker: ... It's true!... We're all puffed up with ourselves now because we invented *the bomb*... Dropped the... Beat the daylights out of the Japanese; the Nazis... But if 'big business' closes the door on THE LITTLE GUY WITH A NEW IDEA, WE'RE NOT ONLY CLOSING THE DOOR ON PROGRESS, BUT WE'RE SABOTAGING EVERYTHING THAT WE FOUGHT FOR!... EVERYTHING THAT THE COUNTRY STANDS FOR! And one day, we're gonna find ourselves at the bottom of the heap, instead of king of the hill, having no idea how we got there; buying our radios and our cars from our former enemies!... I don't believe that's gonna happen; I *can't* believe it, cuz... if I ever, stop believing in plain old common horse-sense of the American people... there's no way I could get out of bed in the morning... Thank you.

  • Abe: [after the trial outside the courthouse, with lots of spectators admiring Tucker's cars] They *love* the cars, the people! Drives me crazy, that the motor company's dead... They'll never be made!

    Preston Tucker: We made 'em.

    Abe: Fifty cars...

Preston Tucker: Aw, what's the difference - fifty or fifty million. That's only machinery!... It's the *idea* that counts, Abe... The dream...
